Job Description

TITLE OF CONTRACT: Extra Duty Contract – Assistant Coach

POSITION TYPE: Professional, Service, or Auxiliary

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: TheWest Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.

  • Communicate with educational personnel, parents, students, and others. Items that may be used to reflect professional and interpersonal relations:

    • cooperate with building principal,

    • cooperate with athletic director,

    • develop rapport with coaching staff within the school,

    • organize coaching staff,

    • develop positive relationship with participants,

    • develop positive relationship with student body,

    • develop positive relationship with faculty,

    • develop positive relationship with parents and community,

    • develop positive relationship with game officials,

    • develop positive relationship with news media,

    • develop positive relationship with opponents,

    • employ appropriate conduct during games,

    • employ appropriate conduct during practices,

    • attend league, conference and WVSSAC meetings,

    • participate in activities that foster professional growth and development,

    • motivate staff and players toward desired goals, and

    • command respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior and language.

  • Organize strategies for teaching sports skills and sports management systems.

    • develop high caliber and quality instruction,

    • teach fundamental skills,

    • handle athletic injuries,

    • care for equipment,

    • supervise participants and discipline team appropriately,

    • design quality organization of practice sessions,

    • design pre-season planning,

    • supervise managers and other support personnel,

    • manage budget,

    • follow purchasing procedures,

    • initiate game organization skills,

    • follow league, conference, and WVSSAC policies,

    • devote time and energy to coaching duties, and

    • follow end of season procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • WV Professional Teaching Certificate AND/OR
  • WVSSAC Certification as required under WV State BOE Policy 5202 required.
  • Must have at least Intermediate SLPI:ASL skill level to communicate with School for the Deaf coaches and athletes
  • Must have principal's recommendation.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position required the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.

EXPECTATIONS:

  1. The staff member must meet ASL and/or Braille skill level requirements as delineated in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification.
  2. The staff member must complete all required annual trainings.
  3. The staff member works effectively as a member of the educational team.
  4. The staff member demonstrates self-control and exhibits an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance.
  5. The staff member demonstrates ethical conduct and good work habits such as punctuality and attendance.
  6. The staff member demonstrates self-direction and the ability to use software applications for work productivity and collaboration.
  7. The staff member is self-motivated and demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments to accomplish high-quality work to meet demanding deadlines.
  8. The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies.
  9. The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.

SALARY:

Per WVSDB Coaching Pay Schedule

EVALUATION

Evaluations will be conducted in accordance with provisions established for Evaluation of Professional Personnel – WVBE Policy 5310 by her/his department administrator.
