RPS, A Tetra Tech Company, is seeking two Casual Ecologists / Spotter Catchers to join our growing Oceans and Environment team in Cairns. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic ecologist or environmental professional looking to gain hands-on experience across a diverse range of projects throughout Far North Queensland.

Working alongside experienced ecologists and environmental specialists, you will assist with fauna spot catching, ecological surveys, environmental assessments and field investigations that support major infrastructure, development and environmental projects.

No two days are the same, with opportunities to work across a variety of sites and contribute to projects that make a genuine difference to communities and the environment.

About the role

As a Casual Ecologist / Spotter Catcher, you will support our environmental team by:

  • Undertaking fauna spot catching and wildlife management during vegetation clearing activities
  • Assisting with ecological field surveys and site investigations
  • Recording accurate field observations and environmental data
  • Assisting with environmental assessments and technical reporting
  • Supporting due diligence assessments and environmental planning activities
  • Liaising professionally with project teams, contractors and clients on site
  • Maintaining a strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards
  • Contributing positively to a collaborative and high-performing team.

About you

We are looking for someone who is passionate about Australia's unique wildlife and enjoys working outdoors. You will ideally have:

  • A degree (or be currently studying) Environmental Science, Ecology, Zoology, Natural Resource Management or a related discipline
  • Previous ecological field experience, including fauna surveys or spot catching, highly regarded
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Queensland flora and fauna, particularly Far North Queensland species
  • Well-developed wildlife identification and taxonomic skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • A positive, proactive approach and willingness to learn
  • A current Australian driver's licence
  • Flexibility to undertake field work, including early starts, remote locations and varying work schedules.
