Job Description

The ECMO Specialist II supports the mission, vision, and values of Emory Healthcare by providing advanced care for patients receiving Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS). Working in collaboration with ECMO Program Leadership and a multidisciplinary healthcare team, the ECMO Specialist II manages ECMO therapy across the continuum of care, including acute, subacute, and outpatient follow-up phases. This role provides advanced clinical assessment, participates in ECMO procedures, supports patient transport, maintains ECMO equipment and supplies, and contributes to program quality improvement and education initiatives. Primary duties and responsibilities: Clinical ECMO Patient Care 1. Independently manage ECMO support for patients within established clinical protocols. 2. Assist perfusionists with ECMO initiation procedures and understand the procedural steps required for ECMO initiation. 3. Provide ECMO support using non-primary ECMO circuits when required. Clinical Communication and Education: 1. Communicate ECMO-related patient issues to multidisciplinary teams including pharmacy, pulmonology, nephrology, and other specialty services. 2. Analyze ECMO circuit trends and recommend troubleshooting strategies to the ECMO team. 3. Precept and mentor new ECMO Specialist I's and support ECMO education initiatives. Travel: Less than 10% of the time may be required. Work Type: On-Site Minimum Required Qualifications: Education - Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing or Respiratory Therapy. Experience - 5-10 years of Critical Care RN or RRT experience. If less than 5 years of CVICU specific experience, must have greater than 2 years of ECMO experience. Licensure - Active Georgia RN or Respiratory Therapy license or eligibility for licensure. Certification - Basic Life Support (BLS). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Knowledge, skills, and abilities (required): - All competencies of ECMO Specialist I. - Ability to communicate ECMO-related issues to non-ECMO clinical specialties. - Ability to analyze ECMO circuit patterns and recommend troubleshooting actions. - Ability to precept ECMO Specialist I new hires. - Ability to assist perfusionists with ECMO initiation procedures. - Ability to provide ECMO support using non-primary ECMO circuits. Preferred Qualifications Experience - 3-5 years of ECMO Specialist experience Certification - Advanced ECMO training or ECLS-related professional certifications. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the work day (occasionally) Lifting 25 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environmental conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, Bio-hazardous waste chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, Communicable diseases, Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
