Job Description

Are you an experienced emergency veterinarian ready to take the next step in your leadership journey? VRH, a leading multi-disciplinary specialist referral hospital, is seeking a passionate and driven Emergency Veterinary Team Leader to guide our dedicated emergency team.

In this pivotal role, you’ll lead a team of emergency veterinarians, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care. You’ll foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture, support clinical excellence, and work closely with other specialist departments to maintain seamless patient care across services. The Team Leader will work alongside Dr Samantha Day, Head of Critical Care, to ensure continuity of care and team support.

About VRH

The Veterinary Referral Hospital has been providing veterinary referral and emergency services to the pets of Melbourne for over 25 years. We take great pride in delivering the highest possible standards of veterinary medicine and customer service.

Our hospital is a purpose-built 24-hour ECC and referral facility. We have all the equipment you need to practice at your best and continue learning new skills. More importantly, we have the only truly multi-disciplinary veterinary team in Victoria, including specialists in Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Neurology and Anaesthesia. Our case-load is incredibly varied, interesting and often challenging.

You’ll be joining a friendly and supportive ECC team that includes 3 ECC specialists (FANZCVS and DACVECC), an ECC Registrar, ANZCVS Membership veterinarians, experienced emergency vets, and recent graduates. Our ECC nurses are among the best in the industry—passionate, hardworking, and dedicated to high levels of patient care.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Providing visible, accountable leadership and mentoring to the emergency team
  • Driving clinical governance and continuous improvement
  • Overseeing operational efficiency and resource utilisation
  • Collaborating across departments to ensure continuity of care
  • Enhancing client experience and managing escalations
  • Supporting onboarding, training, and professional development
  • Contributing to strategic planning and service growth

What We’re Looking For

  • A qualified and experienced emergency veterinarian registered (or eligible) in Victoria
  • Membership in Emergency & Critical Care (MANZCVS) is preferred but not essential
  • Proven leadership and team management skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities
  • Commitment to clinical excellence and patient care
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment
  • A passion for mentoring and supporting team development
