Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The Academy at Middle Fork is a UNC-System lab school that is operated by Appalachian State University in partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

The Exceptional Children’s teacher will play an integral role in developing a robust academic program for students in a self-contained, blended classroom. They will provide specialized instruction to support students with disabilities such as, but not limited to, developmental delay, functional behavior skills, and autism. They are expected to guide students in their social, emotional, and academic development. The teacher must be an enthusiastic and transformative teacher who will plan innovative lessons, cultivate an welcoming community of learners, and implement authentic, project-based learning experiences. The teacher will facilitate a learning environment by planning, organizing, and implementing an appropriate instructional program that is relevant to their culture, lives, and future. They must be flexible, willing to work collaboratively with others, and committed to the academic growth of all students regardless of need.

Minimum Qualifications

• Degree in special education
• NC Teaching License – Special Education: General Curriculum (K-12) and/or Special Education: Adapted Curriculum (K-12)

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of successful teaching experience
• Experience working with students with mild disabilities and Autism
• Master’s degree in special education
• National Boards

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The North Carolina General Assembly established the University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites to prepare future teachers and school administrators. Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Model and meet the expectations of the Portrait of a Lab School Team Member.
• Use restorative practices and a growth mindset to address learning and behavior needs.
• Communicate, engage, and interact positively, effectively, and regularly with colleagues, students, and families.
• Provide specialized instruction and behavioral support to students with disabilities such as, but not limited to, developmental delay, functional behavioral skills, and autism.
• Provide high-quality instruction aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study, student IEP goals, and progress monitoring data, utilizing a variety of teaching methods and materials to support student learning.
• Maintain a structured and supportive classroom environment that encourages positive behavior and learning.
• Develop and implement Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students, ensuring compliance with IDEA.
• Assist students with disabilities with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
• Co-teach with general education teachers, other EC teachers, and/or speech-language pathologists, to provide instruction for students.
• Provide guidance and support to the EC teacher assistant in implementing instructional strategies, managing student behavior, and fulfilling their roles in supporting student learning.
• Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
• Engage in opportunities for enhanced professional development to stay current in innovative teaching practices affecting the whole child.
• Comply with state and federal education statutes, including the NC Code of Ethics for Educators and the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• Other duties as assigned
