Project Overview:

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.

The Earthworks Area Manager is assigned to the field construction organization in a supervisory capacity. Responsible for supervising and directing operations within the Civil discipline for sight levelling and excavation operations. Leads and develops construction teams, including superintendents, craft professionals and subcontractors, to deliver integrated project outcomes. Ensures assigned construction operations and subcontractors' performance comply with specifications and within schedules and budget. Performs general functions inherent in all supervisory field earthworks positions.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Leads execution of bulk earthworks operations including excavation, embankment, haulage, material balance, site levelling, surface and closed drainage systems to support overall project delivery. Responsible for safety, quality, and performance.
  • Directs assigned construction work in accordance with Bechtel's safety program.
  • Coordinates subcontractors, suppliers and internal disciplines to ensure integrated execution across the assigned work area.
  • Ensures the most current design document and vendor drawing is used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.
  • Approves craft time records using established automated tools and for subcontractors review and approve invoices and installed quantities.
  • Prepares schedules, construction methods and procedures. Participates in constructability reviews and execution plans.
  • Coordinates area construction schedules, manning plans and equipment requirements to support delivery targets
  • Supervises and directs subordinate personnel and craftsmen in construction activities within assigned area.
  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, equipment forecasts, and expenditures forecast for direct hire and subcontractor execution
  • Monitors tool usage on the site. Prepares Field Material Requisitions for tools and consumables and ensures that the crafts have the tools they require to be productive.
  • Monitors work activities and ensure the quality of work performed and that the activities of subcontractors meet compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Responsible for the implementation of corporate/ project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned operations.
  • Coordinates activities with other disciplines or areas, and clients' resident representatives as instructed by construction management.
  • Leads development of personnel through performance management, mentoring and training to build capability and sustain delivery performance. Identifies craft training requirements.
  • Ensures that all Bechtel and Polish codes, requirements and standards are being complied within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Provides input to Subcontractor formation, oversight, and coordination verifying installations are in accordance with design and specifications
  • Coordination with Surveying team to verify site excavations are performed within the plant grid system

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 15+ years of relevant experience or 19+ years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Craft professional and professional staff supervision experience with a strong civil background.
  • Subcontractor management experience supervising oversight of subcontractors
  • Experience in Construction Project Planning and Scheduling.
  • Knowledge of Construction Quality Assurance. Knowledge of a single or multi discipline construction or engineering operation.
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.
  • Familiarity with current nuclear and industry quality standards.
