Job Description

OF POSITION:

  • The nurse practitioner (NP) will work in concert with OB/GYNs and be responsible and dedicated to the Early Labor Evaluation (ELE) Unit for triage and treatment of urgent and emergent obstetric and gynecologic problems. The ELE unit will be managed by the NP Monday-Thursday from 9am to 5pm and on Friday from 9am to 1pm.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Family Birth Center Director

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Obtain history, perform medical screening exams and procedures.
  • Discuss treatment options, initiate and/or collaborate plan of care.
  • Provides patient education.
  • Identifies community health resources and refers patients as necessary.
  • Assists with training of staff in clinical standards, health education, and policy development.
  • Participates in in-service educational activities of the department and organization.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork.
  • Handles other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing
  • Graduate of an accredited Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program or from an accredited NP program with a minimum of 5 years of OB/L&D/OB triage experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, pharmacology and management of acute and chronic patient/family problems; Twelve hours continuing education or in-service hours required annually.
  • Currently licensed in the State of Louisiana as an Advanced Practice Nurse, Board-certified or eligible
  • BCLS and ACLS certifications required, NRP certification preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
  • Requires emotional stability and resilience. Must be adaptable to change, be decisive and demonstrate foresight.
  • Exhibits organizational and leadership ability.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work requires a variety of physical activities, including moving about within and outside of all hospital properties for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergent situations.
  • May be required to assist in controlling disorderly conduct or combative patients.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
