Job Description

POSITION: Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher/Aide

LOCATION: Marlinton Elementary School

CLASSIFICATION: Service Personnel

REPORTS TO: Principal

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and Pocahontas County Schools Policy 4220

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

CONTRACT: 200-Day Contract

SALARY: Based on experience and education level per Pocahontas County Schools salary schedule and State Minimum Pay Scale for Service Personnel §18A-4-8a. See pocahontascountyschoolswv.sites.thrillshare.com for pay scales and benefits information.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Term of employment shall be 200 days each academic year (July 1 through June 30).

Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8:

An Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher (ECCAT)/Aide is an employee who performs duties in an instructional setting, assists professional personnel, and may perform duties requiring specific skills and abilities related to assigned student needs and educational programs.

The ECCAT/Aide provides instructional, behavioral, personal care, health-related, transportation, and supervisory support services to students under the direction of professional educators and administrators. Assignments may include general education classrooms, special education classrooms, Pre-K programs, individual student support, transportation services, or other educational settings as determined by district needs.

The employee assists in creating and maintaining a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment that promotes student growth, independence, and success while ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state requirements, including those pertaining to special education, student confidentiality, health, and safety.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5.
  • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category, or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Support

  • Supporting Instruction: Assists teachers in implementing instructional activities and educational programs for individual students, small groups, and whole-class settings under the supervision of professional staff.
  • Reinforcing Learning: Provides supplemental academic support and practice activities designed to reinforce skills and concepts introduced by the teacher.
  • Facilitating Student Participation: Assists students in accessing instructional materials, technology, accommodations, modifications, and classroom activities.
  • Preparing Instructional Materials: Prepares, organizes, distributes, and maintains instructional materials, equipment, and classroom resources.

Student Support Services

  • Supporting Individual Student Needs: Assists students with academic, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and functional needs as assigned.
  • Implementing Student Plans: Assists in carrying out instructional strategies, accommodations, modifications, behavior support plans, medical plans, and other individualized supports as directed by professional staff.
  • Promoting Independence: Encourages students to develop self-help, self-advocacy, social, organizational, and independent living skills appropriate to their developmental level.
  • Maintaining Documentation: Collects and maintains observational data, records, and documentation as directed by professional staff.

Personal Care and Health Services

  • Providing Personal Care Assistance: Assists students with toileting, feeding, dressing, hygiene, mobility, positioning, lifting, transferring, and other personal care needs as assigned.
  • Supporting Student Health Needs: Assists with prescribed health-related services and procedures for which training and authorization have been provided in accordance with district procedures and state requirements.
  • Ensuring Student Safety: Maintains awareness of student health, safety, and well-being and promptly reports concerns to appropriate personnel.

Behavioral Support

  • Supporting Positive Student Behavior: Implements behavior support strategies and classroom management techniques as directed by professional staff.
  • Monitoring Student Behavior: Assists with supervision and behavioral support during instructional and non-instructional activities.
  • Responding to Student Needs: Maintains professionalism and responds appropriately to behavioral, emotional, medical, or crisis situations.

Supervision and Transportation

  • Supervising Students: Provides appropriate supervision during instructional activities, transitions, recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and other assigned activities.
  • Supporting Transportation Services: Assists in providing safe transportation services for students when assigned transportation duties, including loading, unloading, securing equipment, and monitoring student behavior and safety during transportation.
  • Promoting Safety: Follows established safety procedures and assists in emergency response activities as required.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintaining Confidentiality: Protects confidential student, personnel, and district information in accordance with federal and state laws and district policies.
  • Demonstrating Professionalism: Maintains positive work habits, dependability, flexibility, ethical conduct, and professional demeanor.
  • Participating in Professional Learning: Attends required meetings, trainings, workshops, and professional development activities.
  • Maintaining Positive Relationships: Promotes positive relationships among students, families, staff, and community members.
  • Complying with Policies: Adheres to applicable federal laws, West Virginia Code, WVBE policies, county policies, and the Pocahontas County Schools Employee Code of Conduct.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting with Classroom Operations: Supports classroom organization, inventory, recordkeeping, and instructional preparation activities.
  • Supporting School Programs: Assists with school activities, events, field trips, and programs as assigned.
  • Performing Assigned Responsibilities: Carries out other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, supervising teacher, or designee in support of the educational mission of Pocahontas County Schools.
