Early Childhood Assistant

Position Purpose

To provide support to the teachers by helping to set up tasks and implement instructional processes. This job involves preparing activities for the day under the instruction of the teacher, supervising the children under their care, and ensuring the classroom stays organized. Due to their students’ young age, preschool assistants take on a combination of educational and child-care duties. This role is well suited to people who are patient, have good attention to detail, and have experience of working with children.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist classroom teacher with daily duties.
  • Facilitate small group instruction.
  • Complete clerical duties as assigned by teacher.
  • Supervise student behavior and activities.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, calculator, and telephone.

Travel Requirements
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Pay Rate
$15.75 per hour.

Work Schedule
8 hours per day.
182 days per year.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Willingness to work with children.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you.
 
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Seldom = Less than 25% Occasional = 26 to 50% Often = 51 to 75% Very Frequent = Greater than 75%.

       Physical Requirement Percentage of Time          Ability to stand for extended periods of time.  Occasional Ability to lift 25 pounds.  Occasional Ability to carry 25 pounds.  Occasional Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.  Seldom Ability to see for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed matter.  Occasional Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.  Very Frequent Ability to operate job-related equipment.  Occasional Ability to reach in all directions.  Often

Experience
  • Experience working with young children is preferred.
