Responsibilities & Key Deliverables

The Deputy Manager - Maintenance (Tractor) will play a pivotal role in overseeing and directing all maintenance activities related to the tractor transmission line at Mahindra Tractors Zaheerabad. This position involves ensuring optimal plant uptime by managing preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance activities while adhering to safety and quality standards. Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and scheduling maintenance activities to reduce downtime and enhance equipment reliability on the transmission line.
  • Leading a team of maintenance engineers and technicians to ensure efficient and timely execution of all maintenance tasks.
  • Implementing continuous improvement initiatives in maintenance processes, leveraging lean manufacturing principles and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) practices.
  • Collaborating with production, engineering, and quality teams to identify root causes of equipment failures and drive corrective actions.
  • Managing spare parts inventory and maintenance budgets to optimise costs without compromising equipment availability.
  • Driving digitisation efforts within maintenance operations, such as implementing Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and predictive maintenance technologies based on data analytics.
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory safety and environmental regulations and promoting a culture of safety and operational excellence.
  • Supporting the development and training of maintenance personnel to enhance technical skills and career progression.
  • Working closely with external vendors, contractors, and union representatives to maintain healthy work relationships and seamless operations.
  • Monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment uptime, maintenance cost, and safety incidents, and driving continuous improvements accordingly.

Education Qualification

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical education credentials to support the demanding engineering and operational aspects of this role. Essential qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognised university.
  • Alternatively, a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with substantial relevant experience in maintenance of manufacturing machinery, preferably in the automotive or tractor manufacturing sectors.
  • Additional certifications related to maintenance management, lean manufacturing, or Six Sigma would be considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing systems, industry 4.0 practices, and digital maintenance technologies is desirable to support innovation initiatives.

The educational background must reflect a strong foundation in mechanical systems, production processes, and modern maintenance practices to effectively lead operations within a high-volume manufacturing environment.

General Experience

Candidates should bring a comprehensive range of experience that equips them to successfully manage maintenance functions in a complex manufacturing setting. Key experience requirements include:

  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years experience in maintenance management within a manufacturing or automotive production environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in planning, coordinating, and executing maintenance activities, including preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with multiple departments including production, engineering, and quality assurance.
  • Experience managing budgets, supplier relationships, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Hands-on familiarity with manufacturing technologies relevant to tractor or heavy vehicle assembly lines.
  • Track record of successfully driving continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining high equipment uptime in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

Depth in managing maintenance for critical machinery like transmissions or powertrain assembly lines is particularly valuable, coupled with exposure to digitalisation and maintenance analytics.

Critical Experience

Essential critical experience for this role includes leadership and operational expertise combined with innovation and stakeholder management capabilities:

  • Prior experience in heading manufacturing operations or maintenance functions in tractor or automotive sectors, with at least one support function such as Supply Chain Management (SCM), Production Engineering (PE), or Production Planning and Control (PPC).
  • Hands-on experience leading digitisation projects within manufacturing, such as the implementation of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), and use of big data analytics to optimise maintenance schedules.
  • Proven track record in deploying Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Total Quality Management (TQM), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), and Lean Manufacturing methodologies to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Strong relationship management skills to foster and maintain healthy collaborations with government bodies, union leadership, vendors, and other key business partners.
  • Capability to integrate sustainability-focused leadership approaches while maintaining operational excellence.
