POSITION SUMMARY:

This position covers the Northern or Southern front desk handling walk-up customers, answering telephones, and monitoring cameras in the facility and outside the building.

STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE:

$22.20 - $23.59/Hourly

$46,169 - $49,061/Annually

*This is the anticipated starting salary range for this position. Please note that the final salary will be determined by the Office of Human Resources, commensurate with experience and aligned to ensure internal equity with similarly situated roles.*

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Performs technical level police operations work under regular supervision from a technical superior. Work includes enforcing relevant Howard County Code, civilian support to police work, assisting with criminal and non-criminal complaints, and performing support work for the various bureaus within the Police Department. Work may also include custody of property; collecting and preserving physical evidence; identifying criminals by prints and maintaining related records and files; identifying, capturing, transporting, and caring for animals.

*This is a Classified position, meaning that it is a part of the Howard County Classified Service upon completion of a probationary period of at least six (6) months*

*Please note that this position falls within a collective bargaining unit and is represented by AFSCME Local 3085, Local 3888, or Local 1810.*

Examples of duties

Administrative and Clerical Support:

  • Answering multiple phone lines, transferring calls, taking messages, addressing public inquiries.
  • Accepting and distributing packages and mail.
  • Completing leave slips for patrol personnel and notifying incoming Watch Commanders of callouts.
  • Serving as backup for building inspections and maintenance when assigned staff are unavailable.

Front Desk and Public Interaction:

  • Greeting visitors, taking reports, assisting with ERO signatures, answering questions.
  • Communicating announcements over the intercom system.
  • Monitoring court-ordered child custody exchanges.
  • Monitoring the medication drop-off box.

Operational and Officer Support:

  • Taking TRUs.
  • Using the radio to contact officers.
  • Receiving information from officers and entering data into Microsoft Access Arrest and Tow logs.
  • Researching calls for service in I-Leads and/or Netviewer.
  • Submitting recovered property and logging chain of custody for non-criminal matters.

Facilities and Security Monitoring:

  • Maintaining and ordering patrol and office supplies
  • Monitoring and maintaining copier and fax machines
  • Operating the electric door panel to grant secure access
  • Monitoring interior and exterior camera systems

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • MILES/NCIC Authorization.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Computer skills/data entry.

LANGUAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
