Job Description

Posting number: 2026-02964

Department: Dept. of Social and Health Services

Division: FTAA

Job classification: STATIONARY ENGINEER 2

Posting type: Open & Promotional

Categories: Building Maintenance, Maintenance

Summary

Keeping a boiler plant running safely takes experience.

Join the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Facilities, Technology, and Analytics Administration (FTAA), Maintenance and Operations Division as an on-call Stationary Engineer 2 supporting Eastern State Hospital and Lakeland Village in Medical Lake.

This is specialized boiler work—not general facility maintenance.

You'll operate, monitor, and maintain high- and low-pressure steam boilers, hydronic water heating boilers, and the equipment that supports them. The plants include six high-pressure steam boilers, two low-pressure steam boilers, two hydronic water heating boilers, and combustion control systems including Weishaupt, Siemens, Patterson-Kelley NURO, SCADA, and Metasys.

We encourage you to apply if you already understand the fundamentals of safely operating high-pressure boilers. This work requires trained judgment, knowledge of combustion, and experience with boiler and auxiliary equipment. You should be comfortable recognizing when something isn't operating correctly and knowing what action to take.

You'll also need hands-on operating ability.

That includes lighting off high-pressure boilers and multiple burners using manually operated equipment, bringing boilers online without relying on automatic control devices, paralleling them, transferring operation to loop controls, and placing the boiler into service.

The schedule starts differently than it continues.

You'll begin with approximately 1.5 to 2 months of full-time, paid training at 40 hours per week. After training, you'll move to an on-call schedule, filling in for permanent staff as needed. Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. All interviews for this position are conducted in person.

  • Operate auxiliary boiler equipment, including feedwater and condensate pumps, deaerators, air compressors, fuel oil pumps, and chemical treatment pumps.
  • Troubleshoot boiler operations and combustion control systems, including Weishaupt, Siemens, Patterson-Kelley NURO, SCADA, and Metasys.
  • Read schematics, drawings, and equipment manuals.
  • Test boiler equipment and safety systems.
  • Perform boiler-water and condensate treatment, cleaning, and blow-down operations.
  • Respond to after-hours, weekend, and holiday boiler plant issues and notify the Plant Manager or designee when needed.

Who Should Apply

You qualify through one of the following:

  • Three years of experience operating, maintaining, and/or repairing stationary or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems

Or

  • Completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college and two years of related experience
