Job Description
Job Location: Thatcher Transportation UT - Salt Lake City, UT 84104
Position Type: Full Time
Job Shift: DayMake a meaningful difference: At Thatcher Chemical facilities across the nation, our manufacturing teams create the essential chemistries, processes, and solutions that support clean water, safe environments, reliable infrastructure, and critical industries. From production and quality to logistics and distribution, your precision, dedication, and commitment to continuous improvement help transform raw materials and innovative science into real-world solutions. Your purpose-driven work plays a vital role in protecting public health, supporting communities, and shaping a safer, more sustainable future.
We are hiring a Transportation Manager- Chemical Manufacturing in our Salt Lake City Plant.
As Driver Manager, you'll lead the team that keeps that promise alive. This role is for someone who thrives on being in the field, coaching drivers one-on-one, solving problems before they become issues, and building a culture where safety and service aren't competing priorities - they're the same thing.
Safety and compliance come first
You'll spend time where it matters most: riding along with drivers, watching loading operations, catching small things before they become big problems. You'll know our drivers by name, understand their routes, and help them see hazmat compliance not as paperwork but as protecting themselves and the communities we serve.
This means partnering in the full DOT and FMCSA compliance picture for your fleet group - hours of service, ELD monitoring, drug and alcohol program coordination, vehicle inspections, and incident response. When something goes wrong, you'll facilitate the investigation, figure out what happened, and work across dispatch, maintenance, and EHS to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Customer service is how we keep our reputation
On-time performance isn't optional in our business. Customers count on us, sometimes on short notice, sometimes in the middle of the night. You'll work closely with customer service and operations to resolve exceptions quickly and communicate transparently when challenges arise.
You'll also partner with site leaders to smooth out the details that make a difference - loading windows, access protocols, documentation requirements for bulk and packaged hazmat. Every delivery is a chance to reinforce why customers trust Thatcher.
Productivity and continuous improvement keep us competitive
You'll balance competing demands every day: cost efficiency, driver quality of life, and service commitments. That means optimizing dispatch plans, asset utilization, and routes while tracking KPIs that tell the real story - on-time in full (OTIF), hours of service utilization, fuel efficiency, out-of-service rates, preventable incidents, dwell time, and driver retention.
You'll also coordinate closely with maintenance to schedule PMs and repairs without disrupting service, and ensure our tanker equipment - pumps, hoses, valves, placards - is always hazmat-ready.
Field leadership and driver development
Expect to be on the road about 30% of the time. This isn't desk work. You'll visit plants and customer sites, observe drivers in action, run quick huddles, and coach on everything from securement and product stewardship to customer interactions that build long-term relationships.
You'll have tough performance conversations when needed and recognize great work when you see it. You'll also work with Safety, Training, and EHS to deliver hazmat, defensive driving, spill response, and site-specific training that actually sticks.
What you bring
Required:
· At least 5 years managing CDL driver teams in transportation operations; bulk chemical or hazmat/tanker experience is strongly preferred
· Solid working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT regulations, hours of service, ELD compliance, CSA scores, hazmat shipping papers, placarding, and incident reporting
· A track record of improving safety outcomes and service performance in an asset-based fleet
· The ability to influence people across dispatch, customer service, plant operations, and maintenance - even when priorities don't align
· Comfort with regular field travel (about 30% of your time)
Preferred:
· CDL Class A with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements, or willingness to obtain them
· Experience with TMS platforms or telematics analytics (ELD dashboards, etc.)
· Background in chemical distribution (water treatment, energy, mining, dairy, or similar) and familiarity with product stewardship practices
Physical and compliance requirements
You'll need to visit terminals, plants, and customer sites regularly. This includes climbing onto trailers and catwalks, wearing PPE as required, and meeting site safety standards. You'll also need a valid CLD A driver's license, and the ability to pass background checks, MVR review, and DOT drug and alcohol testing.
