
This position performs highly skilled construction and maintenance work in one or more specialized programs, incorporating standard construction and maintenance techniques to produce a finished product to required standards.

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years' experience in maintenance and/or construction, including 6 months experience in operation of heavy-duty equipment.
One (1) year of additional related experience may substitute for one (1) year of high school, up to a maximum of four (4) years.
Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing; exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, inclement weather, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards; and occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying/lifting up to ninety (90) pounds and indoor activity.

The purpose of this position is to serve as a versatile heavy equipment operator and maintenance specialist responsible for the safe and efficient execution of critical infrastructure, landscape, and storm water management projects. The position is expected to operate and maintain a wide array of gas, diesel, and propane powered machinery and heavy transport vehicles, while ensuring all equipment is prepared for deployment through diligent preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
This position will also require on call and emergency response to flooding. The position will operate dump trucks, skid steers, excavators, front end loader, zero turn mower, and a variety of hand tools (I.E. but not limited to) shovels, rakes, weed eaters, backpack blowers, t-post drivers and many more.
This position has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a city-designated extraordinary situation or emergency condition, essential employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees, as well as ensure the continuity of essential operations.
Essential Employees may be called back in during such events, required to modify their schedule, assigned to a city designated work site, or retained on-site to assist with operations and recovery.

This position requires a Texas Commercial Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
Must have a valid Texas Commercial Driver License.
