Drainage Engineer

• Full-time permanent position.
• Salary commencing at $85,114.740 per annum, plus 12% superannuation, commensurate with skills and experience.
• Band 5.
• Graduate Engineers will be employed at Band 5 and after two years may be entitled to movement to Band 6 provided, they have undertaken training and completed tasks that meet the accountability and skill level required by Band 6 as set out in the enterprise agreement.

The Opportunity

Moonee Valley City Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Drainage Engineer to join our Engineering and Capital Works Delivery team. In this role, you will support the delivery and maintenance of Council’s stormwater drainage assets through the management of customer enquiries, undertaking site investigations, and contributing to the development of drainage capital works programs. Working under the guidance of the Senior Drainage Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering innovative and practical stormwater drainage solutions that align with Council policies, standards, and community expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare drainage design briefs, plans, cost estimates, and reports to address flooding and drainage issues.
• Undertake site inspections and investigations of drainage-related enquiries and recommend practical solutions.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of Council’s four- and ten-year drainage capital works programs.
• Perform drainage calculations for minor catchments to support functional system design.
• Provide high-quality and timely responses to internal and external customer enquiries.
• Manage contractors undertaking CCTV inspections and maintenance of drainage assets.
• Liaise with stakeholders including contractors, consultants, and service authorities.
• Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with Council policies, procedures, and project management frameworks.

Skills & Experience

You will have a tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering (recognised by Engineers Australia) and relevant experience in civil or drainage engineering, including exposure to stormwater drainage design and drafting. You will bring sound knowledge of engineering standards, drainage practices, and construction methods, along with the ability to interpret civil drawings and undertake basic drainage calculations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, enabling you to effectively engage with internal stakeholders, contractors, and the community while delivering high-quality customer service. You will demonstrate strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and as part of a collaborative team. A current Victorian Driver’s Licence and Construction White Card are required, and a willingness to work towards Registered Professional Engineer status in line with legislative requirements will be highly regarded.

• Support the Drainage Engineering team in preparing and maintaining the four‑ and ten‑year drainage capital works programs.
• Carry out drainage calculations for minor catchment to design a functional drainage system.
• Provide timely, accurate, and high‑quality customer service in response to drainage‑related enquiries.
• Manage external contractors undertaking CCTV inspections and cleaning of drainage assets.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external authorities regarding minor flood management initiatives and maintain professional relationships.
• Provide technical information services to other Council Departments where required or to outside bodies when authorised to do so.

• Degree in Civil Engineering
• Relevant experience working within roles with a civil engineering background (favourable)
• Current Victoria Driver’s License
• Construction White Card
