Job Description

The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County (“BXDA”) is charged with the twin goals of ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. By “Pursuing Justice with Integrity,” the BXDA places a focus on assistance for crime victims while simultaneously ensuring fairness to defendants. Moreover, the BXDA aims to balance the need to seek appropriate punishment for certain crimes while recognizing when punitive measures do not adequately advance justice. By recognizing these significant distinctions and acting accordingly, BXDA has established a standard of excellence in the representation of the Bronx community at large, which continues to grow stronger every day.

In furtherance of this mission, the BXDA seeks experienced and enthusiastic Trial Preparation Assistant Level 2 (TPA II) to join the Domestic Violence (DV) Bureau. The duties and responsibilities of a DV TPA 2 are primarily to work alongside a team of designated DV ADAs in the gathering of discovery, communication with witnesses and overall support of work needed on intimate partner cases. Each DV TPA 2 will be assigned a group of approximately 4 DV ADAs. DV TPA 2 are assigned to each case in BXDA, alongside the DV ADA, and will be able to share information on each case.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Discovery Obligations
- Identify, gather, redact, and prepare all discovery.
- Maintain record of efforts in collecting discovery for proof of due diligence.
- Update and maintain the discovery checklist.
- Organize and maintain electronic file on the shared drive.
- Coordinate contact with NYPD and legal staff.
- Obtain and listen to Riker’s calls.

Correspondence/Complaint Contact
- Initial victim contact, introductory letters, contact victims/witness and provide a status update on cases.
- Prepare letters and email Orders of Protection to witnesses, defense counsel, and legal staff daily.
- Notify Officers, EMTS, and medical staff for trial.

Motion Responses
- Assist with drafting motions to consolidate cases.
- Prepare ATF, COCs, statements of readiness and affidavits of service.

Draft and Serve Orders to Produce
- Writs of Habeas Corpus.
- Takeout orders.

Subpoena Compliance
- Subpoena phone records, internet history, and social media content, from various carriers and tech companies.
- Subpoena FDNY records (Ambulance Call Reports (ACRs).
- Subpoena medical records from various hospitals and medical facilitates.
- Submit requests for 911/Radio runs (ICAD) to NYPD.

Court
- Provide backup coverage for DVM Court Clerk, including, WEBDV database.
- Obtain Certified documents.
- Pick up/drop off status sheets to Court.

Update BXDA and Case Assignment Spreadsheet
- Print case documents and prepare travel folders for case conferencing and court.

Perform field work
- Including traveling to other agencies, hospitals, and courts.
- NYPD Property Liaison, maintains and logs all property.
- Request and retrieve evidence needed for investigation and trial purposes.
- Travel to the Medical Examiner to have evidence tested, retrieve various documents.

Assist with other bureau tasks and perform all other duties as assigned.
- Provide coverage for front desk reception-Greet, screen, and log in all visitors and cover front desk reception, as needed.

MUST POSSESS A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE WITH A MINIMUM OF TWO (2) YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

- A baccalaureate degree preferred or a high school diploma with four (4) years of work experience in a law firm, governmental agency, civic or community organization.
- A Valid driver's license with a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience is required and must be maintained for the duration of employment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent analytical, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Data Analytic tools (ex. Power Bl), Database Query Language (ex. SQL), Scripting languages (ex. Python/R), and Prosecution Case Management Systems
- Familiarity with legal terminology and court procedures preferred.
- Understanding of the criminal justice system used in New York State and New York City is preferred.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and strong ethics.
- Exhibit an ability to maintain confidentiality of information

Qualification Requirements
1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
