The General Clerk I is an entry‑level administrative support role responsible for performing routine clerical and office tasks to support daily operations. Working under close supervision, this position handles basic data entry, filing, record maintenance, document preparation, and customer or internal inquiries. The role contributes to office efficiency, data accuracy, and smooth administrative workflows while developing foundational clerical and organizational skills.
Role Overview
The General Clerk I supports departments or teams by executing well‑defined clerical duties in accordance with established procedures. The role emphasizes accuracy, organization, professionalism, and responsiveness. Success is demonstrated through reliable task completion, attention to detail, and consistent adherence to administrative standards and timelines.
Clerical & Administrative Support
Perform routine clerical tasks such as data entry, filing, copying, scanning, and document distribution
Process basic forms, records, or transactions in accordance with established procedures
Maintain organized physical and electronic files and records
Assist with preparation of standard documents, reports, or correspondence
Data Entry & Record Maintenance
Enter information accurately into systems, databases, or spreadsheets
Verify data for completeness and correctness
Update records and logs as required
Identify and report data discrepancies or missing information
Communication & Customer Support
Respond to routine internal or external inquiries by phone, email, or in person
Route questions or requests to appropriate personnel
Provide courteous and professional service to coworkers and visitors
Follow privacy, confidentiality, and information‑handling guidelines
Office Operations & Workflow Support
Support daily office operations such as mail handling, supplies organization, and scheduling assistance
Follow established workflows and administrative procedures
Assist with special clerical projects or tasks as assigned

Learn office systems, forms, and administrative procedures
Develop basic knowledge of department operations and policies
Participate in training or on‑the‑job learning opportunities
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required
Entry‑level position; prior clerical, administrative, retail, or customer service experience is helpful but not required
