
This role is part of the final certification step in the mortgage document custody process. As a Document Custody Review Specialist, you will independently review mortgage documents for accuracy and completeness against investor guidelines (including Ginnie Mae requirements), ensuring loans meet strict documentation standards before final certification. What a Typical Day Looks Like:
Spend the majority of your day independently reviewing mortgage documents against established investor and custodial guidelines
Verify key data points such as borrower signatures, loan terms, mortgage amounts, dates, interest rates, payment schedules, and notarizations
Determine whether documents are originals or copies and record findings in the document custody tracking system
Accurately document any discrepancies or exceptions and route them for reporting or resolution
Apply critical thinking when unique scenarios arise that require judgment beyond standard guidelines
Maintain high productivity and accuracy while reviewing a steady volume of files (approximately 150 documents per day)
Collaborate with and support other teams when urgent deadlines arise, helping the broader organization meet critical service‑level agreements
Work in a structured, professional office environment
Key Responsibilities:
Perform document review and data matching using the Document Custody tracking system
Ensure documentation complies with agency and investor guidelines
Identify, document, and escalate discrepancies or risk‑related issues as needed
Maintain precise and timely system updates for tracking, reporting, and audit purposes
Follow established procedures while demonstrating sound judgment when exceptions require interpretation
Adhere to M&T Bank’s risk, regulatory, and internal control standards
Support audits and regulatory requirements as applicable
Promote a respectful, inclusive workplace that reflects the M&T Bank brand
Complete other related duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
Able to lift 30 -50 pounds
Able to climb on a ladder and/or stool and bend for filing
Education and Experience Required:
Associate’s degree or two years of general work experience
Education and Experience Preferred:
Comfort working with computers and internal systems
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to work independently, stay organized, and manage time effectively
Willingness to ask questions and seek clarification when needed
Data entry, document review, or quality control experience
Office or customer service background
Basic system or record review experience
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Work Model/Office Location:
This is a 100% onsite position requiring five days in office per week
Eligible candidates must live within commuting distance to 693 Seneca Street, Buffalo, NY 14210

Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
