Job Description

As a member of the Dock Crew, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities. You will be responsible for securing incoming vessels to moorings, loading & unloading materials on and off vessels, and perform basic maintenance of the equipment involved in the offloading of fish.  While working at our facility, you will also work inside the plant as required to support plant operations.  

Essential Functions/Qualifications  

The responsibilities of the position include the following: 

• Tie/untie incoming/departing vessels to moorings. 
• Deploy/retract oil boom around vessels as needed. 
• Inspect/clean oil boom as needed. 
• Monitor tidal fluctuation and adjust mooring lines as necessary. 
• Follow oral/written instructions from supervisors. 
• Coordinate with crew members of vessels for use of vessel’s crane for removal of hatch covers and stinger manipulation. 
• Load/unload materials or garbage to and from vessels via totes/pallets. 
• Load/unload materials from vessels using winches, lifting straps, and other hoisting devices. Secure lifting attachments to materials and signals crane or hoisting operators to move load to destination. 
• Pack materials onto flatbeds or into containers and install strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit. 
• Operate equipment safely and within its limitations. 
• Maintain good housekeeping of upper and lower dock. 
• Move products and other materials to and from warehouse, delivery vehicles, vessels, and containers by hand or using forklifts and other equipment. 
• Operate a knuckle boom crane as well as a zoom boom. 
• Follow all OSHA/AKOSH/EPA standards and company policies while on company property as well as while operating a company vehicle off property. 
• Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

• Nautical Skills: Basic knowledge of nautical terms, navigation, and seamanship.
• Physical Fitness: Lift and carry weight in excess of 50 pounds repeatedly. Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time. Work long hours in all kinds of weather.
• Safety Awareness: Strong understanding of safety regulations and procedures, including emergency response.
• Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with various marine equipment, including winches, cranes, and anchors.
• Maintenance Skills: Basic mechanical skills to assist with maintenance and repairs of ship equipment.
• Environmental Awareness: Understanding of environmental regulations and practices to protect marine ecosystems.

Interpersonal 

• Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, often in close quarters and under demanding conditions
• Communication: Clear and effective communication skills. Understand and follow instructions, directions, safety rules and procedures in English. 
• Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing work conditions and schedules. Work at least 16 ½ hours per day, 7 days per week for the duration of the contract. Share crew quarters, bathroom facilities, and common dining areas with other crew members. 
• Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve problems that may arise during a voyage.
• Stress Management: Ability to manage stress and work under pressure. Live and work with others in close quarters. 

Education and Experience 

• A high school diploma or GED certificate preferred.
• Experience in a warehouse or shipping environment is preferred but not required.
• Basic math skills.
• Previous experience working in the fishing industry is preferred, but not required. 
• Certain dock positions require driven machinery certifications such as forklift, telehandler, flatbed truck, yard goat, or super forklift which in turn requires a valid driver’s license. 

Work Environment and Schedule 

Dock Crew members are regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. They are frequently exposed to a full spectrum of outside weather conditions from wet/humid conditions with extreme cold to dry sunny conditions with exposure to direct sunlight. The Deckhand is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. Position requires presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska.

Physical Demands 

While performing your job as a Dock Crew member you will be exposed to physically demanding and harsh conditions. The role often requires prolonged standing, walking, and lifting heavy objects, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. This includes lifting and carrying heavy crates, boxes, and equipment, as well as pushing and pulling heavy carts. The work can be physically strenuous, requiring strength, stamina, and endurance. Additionally, the job may involve bending, stooping, and kneeling to access and move cargo. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.
