Job Description

Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a Mount Sinai West (MSW) Division Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine for its Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science Department.

Mount Sinai's Maternal Fetal Medicine team is committed to providing cutting-edge care to high risk patients, from preconception through pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. We work in close collaboration with neonatology, genetics, and medicine and pediatric subspecialists to achieve the best possible outcome.

Mount Sinai West Hospital MFM Division Director Role:

General

  • In collaboration with the Department Chair and MFM System Division Director, develop, implement, and update, as necessary, a strategic plan for the division
  • Create a positive work environment for the division that encourages communication at all levels.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, trust, and collaboration within the division
  • Promote and oversee the development of critical pathways, protocols, and evidence based practice guidelines to establish and maintain the highest standards of quality and cost- effective care for our patients
  • Conduct weekly division meetings for constant improvement and division growth
  • Conduct regular meetings with all division personnel including clinical, research, and administrative
  • Work in collaboration with leadership to resolve issues related to day-to-day operations (e.g. equipment, supplies, staffing) within the practices and inpatient units
  • Assure divisional participation in departmental (e.g., Grand Rounds, Peer Learning), hospital, and health system programs and initiatives
  • Complete annual performance appraisals for practice doctors, including assessment of productivity and continued clinical competency
  • Oversee the MSW Fetal Evaluation Unit (FEU), the MFM Practice, and affiliated offsites

    o Oversee appropriate billing and coding

    o Oversee clinical staff members including ultrasound technicians, nurse educators

    o Ensure and maintain AIUM accreditation

    o Oversee US and consultations at offsites and satellite practices, including via telehealth and remote US reading
  • Monitor the financial status of the division on an ongoing basis with the Department Chair and Administrator and develop corrective action plans to enhance growth and address deficits
  • Work to ensure faculty productivity meets the Mount Sinai Health System standards
  • Monitor clinical activities to optimize RVU’s and other clinical metrics

Academic

  • Maintain appropriate medical certification and professional knowledge base of MFM Division faculty and staff, through participation in continuing medical education programs, review of literature and credentialing processes, including oversight of American Institute of Ultrasound (AIUM) certification
  • Guide and monitor the academic advancement of divisional faculty (and fellows) by assuring appropriate, timely and effective mentorship, feedback and evaluation
  • Assure divisional contributions to the research and quality missions of the department
  • Assure that teaching responsibilities are discharged in a committed, high quality fashion, and monitor timeliness and quality of teaching and evaluation of trainees
  • Assure compliance with medical school, residency, and fellowship requirements
  • Work with the MSW MFM Fellowship Director to support the fellowship, including:
  • ACGME accreditation, and PEC and CCC meetings
  • Review all MFM fellowship applications and select candidates for interview
  • Collaborate with the MSW MFM Fellowship Director in coordinating

    Fellowship Interview schedule and activities surrounding interviews
  • Ensure adequate education of fellows, including formal lectures, oversight, patient care
  • Ensure fellows adhere to rules and regulations regarding duty hours, fatigue policy, etc.
  • Work with fellows to ensure proper thesis proposal, development and implementation
  • Work with students and residents interested in MFM research.

Clinical

  • Establish and oversee implementation of inpatient protocols for high risk patients
  • Collaborate with local and system leadership (e.g. Medical, Nursing, Administrative, Social Work, etc.) to align ambulatory care policies and practices across the system
  • Work with subspecialists to co-manage patients as indicated
  • Oversee interdisciplinary care-planning meetings for patients with critical medical conditions in pregnancy
  • Oversee the MSW Prenatal Diabetes Program
  • Collaborate with Cardiology to enhance the prenatal and postpartum care of patients with hypertensive disorders and cardiac disease, as well as fetal cardiac disease
  • Facilitate collaboration with other specialties (e.g. Endocrinology) as indicated to optimize care for every patient
  • Work with OB/GYN specialty and sub-specialty leadership and providers to ensure patients have timely access to all aspects of MFM care within the inpatient and outpatient environments
  • Collaborate with Social Work, Nursing, and Administrative leadership to ensure that prenatal care meets the guidelines set forth by New York State Prenatal Care Regulations
  • Ensure appropriate inpatient and consultative clinical coverage, 24/7/365
  • Implement staffing plans for times of extraordinary patient care needs and participate in disaster planning and preparedness
  • Work with System Vice-Chair of Quality, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to develop and implement new initiatives and innovative processes to transform the ambulatory practices through the lens of equity and diversity
  • Ensure that quality and service standards are established, monitored, and achieved
  • Foster effective positive working relationships within the department, institution, community and referring practitioners
  • Collaborate with affiliated off-site practices to facilitate and optimize communication for seamless transfer of patients and clinical information as clinically required

Research

  • Work with System Division Director and System Vice Chair of Research to develop a creative divisional research plan integrating clinical, translational, basic science, and health services research and grant opportunities
  • Recruit faculty whose talents and research interests are consistent with the overall divisional/departmental research program
  • Develop, in collaboration with the System Division Director, a plan to deal with gaps in research funding for investigators, as well as a plan for shortfalls in research funding for funded investigators
  • Encourage cross-divisional and departmental research and training collaborations
  • Monitor progress of divisional investigators in collaboration with the System Division Director and System Vice Chair for Research, as appropriate
  • Assure compliance with research administration requirements
  • Medical Degree from an Accredited University
  • New York State Medical License
  • Board Certified in OB/GYN
  • Fellowship trained in Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in MFM
  • Active DEA license
  • Leadership experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a clinical team
  • Demonstrated professional competence, integrity, and ethical conduct of practice
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, and effective conflict resolution skills
  • Patient focused and committed to providing outstanding and compassionate care and service to all patients
  • Demonstrated commitment to Mount Sinai’s mission, vision and values

Compensation range from 550K to 750K (not including bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits)

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialties, historical productivity, historical collections, and hospital/community need. As such, an actual salary may fall closer to one or the other end of the range, and in certain circumstances, may wind up being outside of the listed salary range. The salary range listed is for full-time employment and does not include bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits.
