
Reporting to the Chair - Anesthesiology, the Division Chief – Pediatric Anesthesiology provides clinical, educational, research and executive management leadership for the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia. S/he enables and ensures the delivery of safe, effective and efficient anesthesia and related services to pediatric and selected adult congenital patients in Sidra Medicine and ensures these are of the highest standard commensurate with appropriate international benchmarks.
The Division Chief – Pediatric Anesthesiology is both a clinical and a managerial leader. S/he works with the Sidra executive team to develop and deliver strategy and business plans and is accountable for performance, quality, management of resources and sustainability in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia. S/he integrates and prioritizes research and education activities with clinical service delivery. It is anticipated that the Division Chief will be able to continue with personal clinical educational and research activities albeit in a reduced and modified manner, and will have a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar.
Reporting to the Chair of Anesthesiology, the Division Chief – Pediatric Anesthesiology oversees the clinical operational and educational leadership for Pediatric Anesthesia services based in Operating Rooms and non-Operating Room sites in the Hospital. Clinical services include anesthesia, sedation, preoperative assessment, perioperative medicine, pain management and resuscitation support to areas throughout the hospital. The Division Chief ensures the delivery of high quality care with an emphasis on patient safety.
The Division Chief - Pediatric Anesthesiology works cooperatively with other teams within the department as well as with other stakeholders outside the department to ensure successful achievement of the clinical and academic goals of the department and organization. S/he provides oversight and is responsible for ensuring the appropriateness and quality of service and care is continually provided to all patients, their families and other hospital staff as prescribed in the patient care and facility standards set down by Sidra Medicine (and applicable national standards) and includes appropriate monitoring of the quality of the care provided by the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia, working with the Department of Quality and Safety. This includes ensuring that the clinical services required are available, with appropriate coverage for all events, and that the departmental resources are managed efficiently.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division and develops implementation strategies to achieve them.
• Ensures the provision of high quality, safe and efficient patient care by the Division.
• Promotes a culture of service delivery in a congenial, supportive, collaborative and equitable environment.
• Recommends clinical privileges, appointment, reappointment and corrective action for each member of the Division as well as promoting mentorship and academic career development for these staff members.
• Provides oversight in the development and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures required to guide and support the provision of safe, efficient and high quality patient care, by the Division.
• Responsible for ensuring appropriate processes for monitoring of the quality of the medical care provided within Pediatric Anesthesiology are in place.
• Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the division.
• Leads clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for the Division.
• Responsible for all administrative related activities of the Division unless otherwise provided by the hospital, and serves on requested committees, and appointing such committees as necessary to conduct the operations of the department and organization.
• Continues surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Division who have delineated clinical privileges, including performance, and ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations (OPPE and FPPE).
• Ensures that the staff of the Division provide services that are in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the Joint Commission International, Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP), and all other applicable regulatory bodies.
• Makes recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participates in the evaluation of products for use by different members of the Division to ensure their safety and efficacy.
• Sets and achieves targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided and initiates actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives.
• Works with the Department Chair to establish and update the working roster for all members of the Division and assures that there is appropriate clinical coverage for all patients requiring medical care from the Division.
• Ensures all members of the Division optimize the use of electronic medical records.
• Sets and achieves targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws of the State of Qatar.
• In conjunction with the Department Chair, ensures the implementation of robust clinical governance structures and processes to ensure patient safety.
• In conjunction with the Chief Research Officer and other Division heads of research, ensures a program of clinical and translational research is developed, promoted and delivered within the Division.
• In conjunction with the Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar, ensures there is an active and continuous program of undergraduate teaching within the Division specialty to ensure an effective learning environment for students, residents, and medical staff.
• Is actively involved in research, graduate teaching, and publication, advising of students and participation in academic services.
• Ensures effective communication and involvement of all staff within the Division in regards to key decisions and initiatives.
• Works collaboratively with other Department Chairs, Chief Officers, and Executive Directors to achieve broad Sidra objectives.
• Conducts other duties as may be directed by the Chief Medical Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer.
• Identifies and coordinates resolution of problems to improve physician utilization and patient satisfaction.
• Develops and maintains appropriate systems of communication between Sidra and other providers of primary and advanced patient care in Qatar for the purpose of individual patient care and systemic safety and quality improvement
• Supports the development of Sidra as a world class regional center.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
MD, MBBS degree or equivalent
Residency training in Anesthesiology
Subspecialty Fellowship in Pediatric Aneshtesiology (or equivalent training)
Certification by a medical specialty board approved by Sidra Medicine
Experience
10+ years post fellowship/board-certification clinical experience including 5+ years in Academic leadership in area of specialty
