The Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) seeks an accomplished academic physician leader to serve as the founding Chief of a new Division of General Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine. Two new divisions are being established through the strategic restructuring of the current Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, the second being the new ‘Division of Aging, Geriatric Medicine, and Palliative Care’. This restructuring is a deliberate investment in focused leadership intended to sustain and accelerate academic growth and excellence in the Department’s generalist and acute care missions.
The founding Chief will lead approximately 280 faculty members organized into three sections, each with its own strategic plan and identity, and will report directly to the Chair of the Department of Medicine. This is a rare opportunity to define, from the outset, the structure, culture, and strategic direction of one of the largest general medicine and hospital medicine enterprises in American academic medicine.
Division faculty have the opportunity to engage in the service, research, and education missions of the Department and IUSM. Faculty practice and teach across the full continuum of undergraduate and graduate medical education and hold impactful Departmental and School educational leadership roles, including the internal medicine residency program directorship, multiple Key Clinician Educator appointments, and clerkship and course leadership positions.
Research faculty maintain deep partnerships with various Research Centers including the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Health Services Research at the Regenstrief Institute, the Center for Health Communication and Information at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, the IU Center for Biomedical Ethics, the Center for Global Health, and the Regenstrief Center for Health Equity Research at Eskenazi Health. Researchers have consistently secured close to $3M dollars in federal and non-federal funding annually over the last three years. Examples of current research include diabetes prevention, improving the care of individuals with rare diseases, implementation of survivorship care plans, and the deployment of large-scale decision aids to guide colorectal cancer screening.

The Chief recruits, develops, and retains faculty; sets and executes the Division’s strategic plan in alignment with both the Department of Medicine 2026 to 2031 Strategic Plan and IUSM’s strategic priorities; oversees the division’s budget and clinical performance in partnership with our health system partners; advances the Division’s research, scholarship, and educational missions; and represents the Division within the Department, the School, our affiliated health systems, and nationally.
This leadership role is expected to reflect a mix of clinical practice and research or scholarly activity, configured with the Chair to fit the successful candidate’s academic profile.

Hospital medicine faculty also serve as leaders in hospital operations, quality, and process improvement efforts.
Primary care similarly spans the state through our health partners and includes medicine-pediatrics trained clinicians. All Eskenazi Health primary care locations are designated Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and serve as a critical healthcare safety net and ensure access to affordable, comprehensive healthcare for underserved and vulnerable populations. The Roudebush Indianapolis downtown VA provides primary care to nearly 24,000 veterans. Our primary care sites also serve as the educational and training anchor for general medicine outpatient rotations.

In 1936, a small group of alumni, friends, and members of the Indiana University community founded the IU Foundation to fulfill a dream of educational opportunity for all.
A not-for-profit corporation, IUF is dedicated to maximizing private sector support for IU. State appropriations provide less than a third of IU’s operating budget, so private gifts are vital to keeping an IU education both exceptional and affordable.
