Job Description

The Team:

  • The Launceston General Hospital is recruiting for a Senior Paediatric Registrar and Paediatric Registrar jobs for 2027!! With the recent implementation of our EBA providing competitive wages and paid education time, there is no better time to work in Tasmania.
  • Outside of work, Launceston has so much to offer! We have world-class food and drinks, a very active Arts scene, and we’re not far from any of the places that Tasmania is famous for, including Cradle Mountain and the Freycinet Peninsula, as well as many other hidden bushwalking gems.
  • We are a busy, regional hospital with a 34 bed General Paediatric ward, including a 4 bed Short Stay Unit, a 12 bed Level 2 Neonatal Nursery and a large Paediatric Outpatients Department, collocated with paediatric Allied Health staff. There really is no better place in Australia to gain experience in the full breadth of General Paediatrics. We pride ourselves on being a friendly, approachable team and you will be very well supported in this position.
  • The unit is staffed 24 hours a day by registrars, with consultant oversight on site during working hours, and on call overnight. The current staffing is 9 registrars, a Senior Registrar and 7 paediatric consultants. There are 4 RMOs on rotation in the unit also, who cover daytimes and evenings 7 days / week. Daytime shifts as well as after-hours work and weekend rotations will be required as rostered. Fortnightly hours would be 76 clinical hours PLUS 10 hours teaching time.
  • The unit has an active education program and is accredited by the RACP for Advanced Training for General Paediatrics with a Perinatal Component, Community/ Developmental Paediatrics and rural rotations. We are also a secondment site for basic trainees from the Royal Hobart Hospital, and if you are early in your career, this position will be a good springboard to entering the RACP training program.

The Role:

  • General Paediatrics, including ward and Emergency department presentations. Short stay unit on the ward.
  • Neonatal ward - babies from 32 weeks gestational age, 1500 deliveries annually.
  • Paediatric outpatients, with both medical and developmental patient load, as well as an Ambulatory care unit within paediatric outpatients.
  • You will be rostered to all of these areas on a rotating basis.

Details of appointments:

  • Multiple fixed term, full time, shift worker position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 1 February 2027 until 6 February 2028.
  • You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro rata.

6, 12 and 24 months positions will be considered. *notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Salary:

Medical Practitioner Level 5 - 11 $134,930 - $189,005 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year.
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as:

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Enrolled in the relevant speciality training program
  • Current Working with Children Registration

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Registration as a candidate of the relevant learned college, or evidence of ongoing participation in and a commitment to continuing medical education
  • Successfully completed all fellowship examinations relevant to the training program and employment, and is within 1 year of obtaining specialist fellowship
