The Role

Distribution Engineers at Commonwealth play a key role in the planning, design, and execution of electric distribution system projects, overseeing the engineering process from initial project scoping through construction support and project closeout. Working under the guidance of experienced distribution engineering professionals, they take ownership of assigned projects and serve as a primary point of contact for clients, project teams, and other stakeholders. Throughout the project lifecycle, Distribution Engineers provide technical expertise, leadership, and coordination to ensure successful project delivery.

What You’ll Do

  • Scope overhead and underground electric distribution projects from conception to closeout.
  • Gather and evaluate field data, client requirements, and existing system conditions.
  • Coordinate project schedules, budgets, and deliverables with all project stakeholders.
  • Design distribution facilities including line extensions, rebuilds, relocations, and system improvements.
  • Prepare detailed construction drawings, engineering calculations, and utility-compliant design packages.
  • Perform critical technical analyses, including load studies, voltage drop calculations, and equipment sizing.
  • Design and specify key infrastructure components like poles, conductors, transformers, and protective devices.
  • Support high-priority utility initiatives such as storm hardening, reliability upgrades, and system modernization.
  • Develop accurate material lists, bills of materials (BOM), and comprehensive project cost estimates.
  • Prepare construction specifications, technical packages, and necessary environmental or municipal permit documentation.
  • Maintain organized, accurate engineering records and project history throughout the lifecycle.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology for Civil, Electrical and Mechanical
  • 4+ years of direct experience in electric utility distribution engineering.
  • Proven track record designing overhead and/or underground electric distribution systems.
  • Deep familiarity with utility design standards, industry safety codes (such as NESC), and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard CAD and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, or GIS platforms, and Distribution Design Studio (DDS)
  • EIT Certification Preferred
