Supervises daily dispatch operationsand responsible for respondingappropriate equipmentor personnel to emergency and non-emergency calls for fire and emergency medical services as well as on call department services.Identifiesand dispatchesappropriate units;complies withUSAP policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all public safety responders and the public.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible formaintaininga safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies withall Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Reviews,modifies, andmaintainsaccuracy of pertinent departmental policies and procedures.

  • Under the direct supervision of the fire chief, responsible for the supervision and operation of all communications and computer management for the Antarctic Fire Department.  This includes theday-to-dayoperation of the fire department dispatch center, including but not limited to; all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, pagers both 9-1-1, and administrative phone lines, VHF radios and fire alarm receiving system.

  • Provides direct supervision of all subordinate communication coordinators (dispatchers).

  • Provides training of all subordinate communication coordinators (dispatchers).

  • Provides quality assurance feedback and coaching to all subordinate communication coordinators (dispatchers).

  • Creation and maintenance of schedule providing 24hr coverage of communications center.

  • Supervises and performs operator maintenance on all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, faxmachinesand pagers.

  • Coordinates, schedules, andmonitorstechnical maintenance of all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, faxmachinesand pagers withappropriate technicians

  • Supervises, schedules work andmonitorsthe performance of subordinate dispatchers.

  • Submits software recommendations.

  • Provides support departmental personnel computer and communications requirements as tasked.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports,etc)in accordance withmanagement policy.

  • Responsible for communicating with and monitoring emergency service personnel.  (Fire Fighters, SAR, fire Technicians, Medical staff, Spill Response personnel, etc.)

  • Answers 9-1-1 and other phone lines taking both emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

  • Monitors the automatic fire alarm system and dispatches emergency responders and/or technicians asappropriateand creates corresponding service requests for technicians.

  • Answers and routes off-continent phone calls for work related and emergency contact purposes.

  • Tracks dispatch createdservice requests for FEMC emergency work-orders.

  • Accurately and efficientlymaintainvarious logs in avariety of formats.  (Software, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, Power Point programs, etc.)

  • Coordinates international communications and relays information toappropriate agencies  Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military, and other agency officials, both over the phone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Coordinates radio communications asrequiredduring SAR or mass casualty events/drills.

  • Notifies communications technicians when equipment malfunctions or failures occur.

  • Maintains knowledge of, and tracks, all outdoor recreational travel, including contacting SAR and the SAR Response Team when guidelines dictate. 

  • Provides near and deep field science team party communication education.

  • Maintains Communication and information plan for near and deep field science team party throughout Austral Summer Season.

  • Provides communication support to personnel in the field.

  • Monitorsvehicletravel away from station during winter and win-fly.  Initiates SAR procedures asrequired

  • Works a varied schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage of the communications center. This includes working weekends,nightsand holidays.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by theon-dutyCaptain.

RequiredEducation, Experience, Certificates and Licenses

  • High School diploma orGED

  • Minimum of five years diversified experience in dispatch radio operations and communications technology isrequired(Fire, EMS, and/or Law Enforcement)

  • At least twoof the fiveyears’experience must be in asupervisoryrole,or two yearspreviousexperience as a Dispatcher with the Antarctic Fire Department.

  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications arerequiredfor offer consideration (training offered through FEMA).

  • Must hold a valid emergency dispatcher certification from APCO, NENA, or a state agency, and/or a DoD Telecommunicator I/II certification.

ExpectedSkills and Competencies:

  • Computer skillsrequired, including Word, Excel,PowerPoint,and e-mail applications. Good judgment and exceptional communication skills. 

  • Must have an ability to independently prioritize requests by level of urgency.

  • Must have the ability to work unsupervised andpossibly aloneduring various levels of urgency and call volume.

  • Complies withapplicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure.

Physical and/or Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • No clearance requirement but the contract and/or the site requires US Citizenship to be approved for access. (includes NACI / T1, MRPT, CAC): Must be able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
