Job Description

The Dispatcher coordinates the allocation and scheduling of drivers, trucks, and containers to optimize capacity, streamline operations, and support customer service goals. Supports route planning, real-time adjustments, and operational efficiency—leveraging tools and data analysis to uphold performance and service metrics.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Assign and adjust driver routes daily to maximize route standardization and productivity.
  • Utilize routing platforms to manage same-day changes and next-day planning.
  • Sequence efficient routes and support dynamic route strategy in response to demand and capacity needs.
  • Maintain constant communication with drivers, Operations leadership, dispatch teams, and customers during route execution.
  • Quickly troubleshoot and resolve en route issues to prevent service interruptions.
  • Collect, interpret, and verify logistics and routing data to improve accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Close routes and input completed service data using digital tools or dispatch systems.
  • Review disposal and service capacity plans to identify optimal load destinations.
  • Work with operations leadership to evaluate swing route opportunities and balance high-demand service loads.
  • Manage service tickets, driver logs, communications, and routing paperwork.
  • Handle incoming requests from customer service, sales, or field staff efficiently.

Scope of Responsibility:

The Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating daily routing and resource allocation to ensure efficient, on-time service delivery. This role manages driver assignments, route optimization, and real-time operational adjustments to maximize capacity and productivity while supporting customer service objectives. The Dispatcher serves as a central communication hub between drivers, operations leadership, customer service, and field teams, proactively troubleshooting issues to prevent service disruptions. By leveraging routing systems, logistics data, and performance metrics, the role drives operational efficiency, maintains accurate service documentation, and supports continuous improvement within a fast-paced transportation environment.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Class A) preferred.
  • Experience operating yard tractors, hostlers, or spotter trucks.
  • Knowledge of trailer handling, coupling/uncoupling, and yard safety best practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and follow instructions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with routing and logistics software; proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (especially Excel).
  • Ability to stay calm and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Customer-centric mindset with proactive issue resolution.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking capability.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s Degree or higher is a plus.
  • Minimum 6 months dispatch or logistics experience preferred; Minimum 2 years preferred for complex operational environments.
  • Prior experience in waste management, transportation, or customer service environments is beneficial.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Office-based role; may require occasional interaction with field or operations facilities.
  • Must manage frequent multi-system workflows requiring focus and stamina.
  • Operates in a dynamic, fast-response environment under tight service schedules.

Travel Required:

  • Minimal travel; limited to movement between nearby local facilities if needed.
