Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop, implement, and maintain various statistical, mathematical and machine learning models to support decision-making by analysis and solving complex problems.

Accountabilities

  • Acquisition and collection of data from various sources, including internal databases, external datasets, and real-time feeds.
  • Performing data cleaning and pre-processing tasks to ensure data quality and suitability for model development.
  • Design and implementation of data management strategies for model maintenance and future development.
  • Designing, development, and implementation of statistical and machine learning models for various applications, including credit risk assessment, fraud detection, customer segmentation, and marketing optimisation.
  • Monitoring model performance in real-time and identify any potential issues or biases.
  • Leading training, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing sessions to uplift ML capability across the organisation.
  • Evaluating and piloting emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks to ensure the organisation remains at the forefront of AI innovation.

Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Candidate will ensure that their team is focused on design and commitment to tm detection application road map based on customer (internal) requirements and prioritisation
  • ensure solutions are maintained and responding to both technical innovation emerging in the industry or adjacent areas (e.g. AI approaches, Machine Learning, network analytics), and the risk environment such that teams can respond to threats as they emerge in reasonable timelines.
  • Ensure models are compliant with regulatory requirements and Barclays policy and standards, working with the control teams responsible for validating our solutions (e.g. Model Risk Management Independent Validation Unit) and engaging on policy decisions and approaches, influencing for effectiveness as well as appropriateness of solution.
  • Working with local solution owners in our team to understand performance and options for improvement and priorities to ensure that core application is evolving and managing such that there is clarity on what is customised for local solution vs. is a solution which should become core and available to all.
  • Engaging with analytics team and quant team to support design and development, and risk owners on requirements and priority.

Role Specific Requirements

  • Senior leadership of large-scale complicated application ownership ideally in a regulated situation – product owner
  • Agile change management experience, ideally SAFe for enterprise level delivery and alignment
  • Experience of machine learning or AI delivery and the associated data management and necessary oversight
  • Experience of complex stakeholder management particularly delivering through others (other teams) and influencing and coordinating in matrix organisations
  • Strong leadership of distributed team
  • Sense of humour, recognising the importance of Transaction monitoring and financial crime surveillance as a whole and the challenges of meeting requirements
