Job Description

Director of Engineering

Accelerate Performance.

About CAI Software

CAI Software builds purpose-built solutions that help manufacturers, processors, and distributors accelerate performance. Our mission is to enable manufacturers to transform performance through a connected, AI-assisted ecosystem that delivers visibility, control, and continuous improvement. We bring the deep operational expertise and enterprise infrastructure to be a true long-term performance partner.

With 6,200+ active customers worldwide and a market-leading position in every vertical we serve, CAI combines 45+ years of industry expertise with modern AI-driven execution - helping businesses move faster, operate smarter, and perform at their peak. We work across 15+ industries and 10+ countries, guided by three values built into our name: Candor, Accountability, and Impact.

CAI Business Units and the Markets We Serve

CAI Software is organized into three business units: Graphic Communications, Process Manufacturing, and Discrete Manufacturing - aligned to the industries we serve. This structure keeps our teams close to customer needs while operating with the scale and support of a global software company.

This role is part of our Graphic Communications business unit, which serves the global print and packaging industry with ERP and production software designed for commercial printers, packaging manufacturers, promotional and transactional print providers, sign and display manufacturers, and in-plant print operations. Our solutions help customers manage complex production environments, improve operational visibility, and deliver high-quality products efficiently and profitably.

CAI India

CAI India is a strategic investment in the company’s future. Our Bangalore Center of Excellence is a place of ownership, expertise, and accountability. Teams in India work on global products end to end, contribute to key decisions, and influence how CAI evolves as a business. This is not a support-led model, but rather a center designed to lead through knowledge, responsibility, and trust.

About the Role

CAI Software is seeking a Director of Engineering to join our Graphic Communications team in Bangalore, India. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with 20+ years of experience building and scaling enterprise products, ideally within the ERP or MIS domain. You'll stay technically engaged in architecture, design, and code-level decisions while providing strategic direction, mentoring engineering talent, and driving product modernization through AI-native development practices — equally comfortable in a design review, a customer conversation, or a hands-on coding session.

What You'll Do

  • Own and evolve the technical architecture for enterprise product lines, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and alignment with modern engineering practices
  • Stay actively engaged in the codebase, reviewing, prototyping, and contributing directly where needed rather than directing from a distance
  • Lead initiatives to modernize legacy enterprise, ERP, and MIS systems using AI-native development approaches such as AI-assisted coding, agentic workflows, and intelligent automation of legacy processes
  • Build engineering capability across the team through structured mentoring, technical coaching, and career development of senior and mid-level engineers
  • Define, track, and report on engineering KPIs (velocity, quality, release cadence, technical debt, adoption metrics) to drive continuous improvement and data-informed decisions
  • Partner directly with customers and stakeholders to understand real-world usage, pain points, and priorities, translating them into product and technical roadmaps
  • Manage, grow, and retain a high-performing engineering organization, fostering a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous learning
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management, QA, DevOps, and executive stakeholders to align engineering execution with business strategy

What We're Looking For

  • 20+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise product development, with demonstrated depth in architecture, design, development, and delivery
  • Prior experience in ERP or MIS environments strongly preferred
  • Proven experience with a modern enterprise technology stack, including Java and .NET on the backend, React on the frontend, and PostgreSQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server
  • Demonstrated ability to operate across the full engineering lifecycle, from architecture and design through hands-on coding, code review, and production support
  • Strong track record of coaching and mentoring engineers at multiple levels of seniority
  • Experience defining and driving engineering KPIs and using data to guide technical and organizational decisions
  • Demonstrated customer-first orientation, comfortable engaging directly with customers and stakeholders to shape technical and product direction
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance technical depth with business pragmatism
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools and practices, such as AI coding assistants, agentic development workflows, or AI-native SDLC, is a plus
  • Direct experience modernizing legacy enterprise products using AI — for example, re-architecting monolithic ERP/MIS systems, introducing intelligent automation, or embedding AI capabilities into existing product lines — is a plus
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps/CI-CD practices and release engineering at scale is a plus

Ideal Candidate Profile

You are a builder at heart — someone who has spent two decades in the trenches of enterprise software, who can still open an IDE and reason through an architecture diagram with equal confidence, and who genuinely enjoys developing the people around you. You see AI not as a buzzword but as a practical lever for modernizing systems that have been running (and working) for years. You lead with data, but you never lose sight of the customer on the other end of the product.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Engineering velocity and release predictability improvements
  • Technical debt reduction / modernization milestones achieved
  • Team growth and retention metrics; mentoring outcomes
  • Customer satisfaction / NPS tied to engineering-driven improvements
  • Adoption and measurable impact of AI-native tooling/processes introduced

Why Join CAI
