Job Description

The Director, Risk Management recommends appropriate external regulatory and compliance frameworks and translates them into meaningful compliance practices at Sofina to identify and mitigate enterprise-wide risks in operational, environmental, financial and informational business areas.

With the oversight of the SVP Treasury & Tax, develops and oversees implementation of approved risk mitigation strategies, policies and procedures, and promotes appropriate governance, risk and compliance behaviour and culture across the organization. The responsibilities will include conducting risk assessments, presenting risk assessment reports, offering and implementing measures and policies aimed at managing risk, and reviewing current risk management policies.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. With the oversight of the SVP Treasury & Tax in collaboration with the heads of Sofina operational, financial and informational business areas, research, develop and oversee implementation of the following:
• Appropriate risk identification and measurement methodologies in line with best practices. Seeks input from appropriate internal functions within the organization including Operations, Finance, Sales, Marketing, Legal and HR.
• Risk compliance policies, processes, procedures and interventions that are adequate to meet the needs of the organization. Ensures they are followed throughout the organization.
• Promotes / encourages appropriate risk management and compliance behaviours and culture across the organization by the effective communication and dissemination of governance risk and compliance policies, processes, and procedures.
• Monitors and analyzes the organization's risk exposure and appetite on a day-to-day as well as long-term basis. Acts promptly upon risk information gathered across the organization.
• Coordinates, the gathering and analysing physical property and risk information to support the establishment and maintenance of the schedule of total insured values. and other insurance policy renewal data and submits to insurers.
• Investigates, resolves, and responds to all property, liability and other claims providing timely notification of claims to insurance carriers.
• Define risk management training gaps and needs. Partners with all site managers, QA Engineering and Maintenance to reinforce risk management goals and standards through training programs, working with managers on their ongoing efforts to educate employees on Sofina’s risk requirements / compliance. to guide and ensure risk management requirements (both internal and external) are being met.
• Develops and communicates plans to address potential loss events and assisting in the design and implementation of crisis response, business continuity and emergency response plans.
• Works with the company’s insurance brokers to respond to requests for certificates of insurance and claims history document.
• Manages the work of the Manager, Risk Management.

2. With the oversight of the SVP Treasury & Tax, integrates the organization’s compliance and risk management strategies to minimize the total cost of risk, including insurance. Completes analysis of appropriate risk transfer options including insurance, and other non-traditional forms of risk transfer (i.e., Captives, Cat bonds etc.) to maximize protection and cost effectiveness.
3. Engages third party risk assessment providers (when required) to ensure adequacy, accuracy and effectiveness of investigations, compliance with corporate policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, and safeguarding of corporate and customer assets. Conducts / assists in completing investigative fieldwork.
4. Assists in providing the ELT and/or the Board of Directors with reports outlining results of risk assessment audits related to all Sofina functions and recommends corrective actions (including appropriate strategies, interventions, preventative measures), as a result of these investigations.
5. Support senior leadership and manage the company’s risk and insurance matters related to due diligence requirements associated with mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic initiatives to identify risk exposures then design, develop and secure appropriate risk transfer mechanisms to minimize their impact and cost of risk.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in business, Legal, Finance, Accounting, or Risk Management required including a Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation coupled with a minimum of seven to 10 years relevant post-designation experience in risk management and insurance.

• Excellent analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills. French language skills are a benefit.

• In-depth knowledge of operational, financial, and informational risk practices and standards.

• Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision with a high level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity, and compliance.

• Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills in a team environment

• Travel within Canada and globally (approximately 7 weeks in the calendar year) will be required

Hiring Range: CAD $120,100 - $170,100
Bonus: This position is eligible for a bonus up to 17.5% of base salary subject to the plan terms and conditions.
Please note that the expected hiring range provided is derived from a group of like roles within Sofina. The final offer amount for this role will be dependent on geographical region, applicable experience, skillset of the candidate and internal equity.
