Job Description

About the Role

Are you a retail operator who thinks like a business owner? This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a high-volume, multi-site consumer business — fuel, car wash, and convenience retail — with full P&L accountability and a genuine mandate to grow. You won't be executing someone else's playbook. You'll be writing it.

Calgary Co-op is seeking a high-impact Director to lead the performance and growth of our Fuel, Car Wash & Convenience Store network — 38 retail locations across Calgary and the surrounding region. With annual business volume approaching $400 million, this is a senior leadership role with full P&L accountability and a mandate to deliver exceptional customer experiences while driving financial results.

Reporting to the VP, Operations, you will bring together operations, commercial fuel sales, and revenue management while partnering across technology, merchandising, finance, and human resources. This role demands a leader who can set strategic direction, build organizational capability, and stay close to executional excellence across a multi-site retail portfolio.

Why This Role Stands Out

Scale with autonomy.

  • You'll run a ~$400M business with the authority to set direction, build your team, allocate capital, and drive performance. This isn't a "manage the status quo" role — it's a growth mandate.

Breadth of scope.

  • Fuel, car wash, commercial fleet sales, convenience retail — you'll have accountability across all of it. If you're energized by complexity and connecting the dots across channels, this is your arena.

Cross-functional influence.

  • You'll work alongside technology, merchandising, marketing, loyalty, and finance teams — leading through influence and building partnerships that shape the broader enterprise.

Room to build.

  • The business has strong bones and real upside. You'll have the opportunity to modernize operations, grow the commercial fuel business, evolve the convenience offer, and improve the car wash experience.

What You'll Own

Business Performance & P&L

  • Lead the full P&L — revenue, margin, EBITDA, labour, and operating expenses — across a ~38-site network
  • Build and execute the annual plan: budget, capital priorities, growth roadmap, and performance targets
  • Identify and capture revenue growth opportunities across fuel volume, car wash, commercial/fleet, and convenience

Retail Operations

  • Set and sustain operational standards across all sites — safety, compliance, brand, and customer experience
  • Build the reporting infrastructure, scorecards, and routines that give real-time visibility into site performance
  • Drive continuous improvement — eliminating waste, improving throughput, and raising execution quality

People & Culture

  • Lead, coach, and develop three direct reports and build leadership depth across the network
  • Foster a culture of ownership, commercial discipline, safety, and genuine customer focus
  • Build accountability frameworks so every leader knows what success looks like

Growth & Strategy

  • Develop strategies to grow fuel volume, car wash subscriptions, fleet/B2B relationships, and convenience basket size
  • Partner with marketing and loyalty teams to drive traffic, retention, and customer lifetime value
  • Identify emerging retail concepts, competitive threats, and market opportunities to keep the network ahead

Convenience & Car Wash

  • Partner with merchandising to optimize the convenience offer — product mix, pricing, food, and promotions
  • Oversee the car wash business: pricing, equipment, maintenance, customer experience, and subscription growth

Technology & Insight

  • Use data to improve pricing, inventory, labour, and customer experience decisions
  • Partner with IT and finance to modernize systems, reporting, and digital tools across the network

What You Bring

You bring a combination of multi-site retail operations leadership, commercial acumen, and genuine P&L accountability. You know how to balance strategy with execution, and you know that culture and capability are what sustains performance over time.

  • Proven multi-site retail or operations leader — fuel, convenience, grocery, QSR, automotive, or similar
  • Demonstrated P&L accountability at the business unit, region, or portfolio level
  • Strong commercial instincts: pricing, revenue growth, margin management, and cost control
  • Experienced in matrix environments — leading through influence, not just authority
  • Data-driven and metrics-oriented, but not paralyzed by it — you act on insight
  • A builder of people: you invest in your team, set high expectations, and create accountability with care
  • Exposure to fuel pricing and operations is a strong asset; fleet or commercial fuel experience is a plus
  • Comfortable operating across operations, marketing, finance, technology, and merchandising
