The Director – Regional Lab Clinical Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for hospital laboratory services, working under the direction of, or in close collaboration with, a Pathologist. This role leads and aligns laboratory professionals, technicians, and non-technical team members to deliver high-quality diagnostic services that support patient care.

The Director oversees all aspects of laboratory operations, including planning, staffing, budgeting, and performance management. This leader drives continuous improvement by analyzing, developing, and implementing systems and processes that enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and service excellence across laboratory functions.

Partnering closely with clinical leadership, the Regional Director is accountable for improving clinical quality and safety, patient satisfaction, team engagement, and operational and financial performance. The role requires developing forward-looking strategies across service lines to respond to evolving market dynamics and support population health within a medical home and accountable care framework. The Director collaborates with senior leaders and front-line teams to lead change initiatives, advance organizational development, and execute strategic partnerships aligned with IU Health’s goals.

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates for the position will be evaluated according to the following criteria and competencies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, with a minimum of five (5) years of management experience.
  • Demonstrated strength in transformational leadership within complex, matrixed environments, with the ability to inspire, solve problems, and communicate effectively across multiple organizations.
  • Proven experience managing multiple, complex projects involving diverse stakeholders, priorities, and objectives.
  • Strong combination of management capabilities and technical expertise, demonstrated through superior planning, decision-making, negotiation, leadership, and financial management skills, with a focus on driving value and supporting a high-performing healthcare environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with employees, management, and community leaders at all levels; recognized as an effective, creative, and visionary problem solver.
  • Proven people leader with the ability to recruit, develop, and mentor high-performing teams capable of supporting sustained growth and success.
  • Experience designing and structuring organizations to achieve targeted business and operational outcomes.
  • Knowledge of key healthcare industry trends and models, including accountable care organizations, and insurance and population risk models.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and governing agency guidelines.
