
The School of Law at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a Director of Academic Support Instructor Position beginning July 1, 2026. The Director of Academic Support serves as the primary administrator responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive support programs designed to enhance student academic achievement in law school. The position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The position will work directly with all faculty, the Director of Bar Support, and the Dean of Students.
This is a full-time position with one remote day on a twelve-month contract.
Term and Renewal: This is for a 12-month contract.
Core Responsibilities:
Program Development and Administration
Coordinate and implement academic support programming
Develop and administer academic support initiatives and resources for students, including academic support Canvas course
Assess academic support programs and make modifications as needed
Create structured programs for different law school stages and programs
Implement initiative that provides data on 1L student academic concerns via formative assessment at early stages of semester
Teaching and Workshop Development
Teaching Assignments:
1L one-credit academic support course (currently Legal Analysis and Problem Solving - two sections for residential students; 1 section for online students)
3L bar-preparation course
Online, part-time program summer course - 1 credit (currently Applied Lawyering Skills)
Other courses as necessary
Maintain Canvas course for Academic Support
Develop, coordinate, and teach workshops focused on core skills required for academic success (e.g., outlining, exam preparation)
Develop and coordinate workshops on executive functioning, time management, study skills, legal reasoning, critical thinking and additional test-taking skills
Peer Tutoring
Oversee peer tutoring program
Assign peer tutors based on faculty input for all in-person and online, part-time 1L and some General Education courses; tutors help students with problem review, class preparation, outlining, and exam preparation
Meet regularly with peer tutors to assess needs of students and effectiveness of tutoring program
Individual Student Support
Provide one-on-one counseling and coaching for students on a minimal as-needed basis
Meet regularly with students on academic probation to monitor progress, identify barriers to success, and develop individualized strategies to improve academic performance and return to good standing
Maintain standard office hours a few times per week
Along with other administrators, meet with members of the 3L class to review transcripts, assess progress toward degree completion, and alert students who may be at risk of not meeting all graduation requirements.
Assessment and Improvement
Monitor and assess academic performance metrics
Collect and analyze data on program effectiveness
Make recommendations for curriculum and program changes
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
Work with faculty across the curriculum
Work closely with Director of Bar Support
Collaborate with Admissions, Student Services, Career Services, and Experiential Education
Serve as a resource to faculty to increase teaching effectiveness
Participate in faculty committees
Other duties as assigned. Note that courses are subject to change.
The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $63,120 - $90,000. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. Qualifications: A J.D. degree and at least three years of post-law school law practice and one year of law teaching experience are required.
