Position Classification

The University at Detroit Mercy seeks a compassionate, visionary and collaborative leader to serve as our next Director of University Wellness and Well-Being. Reporting to the Dean of Students, The Director provides leadership in design, marketing, administration, evaluation, and assessment of outcomes for programs in university counseling, student health services, and public health.

Responsible for the provision of psychological services to the university community in individual and group formats. Assists with strategic planning and assessment of Student Affairs programs, services, and outcomes. Responsibilities include oversight of the public health operations, student health clinic operations, personal counseling operations, budget management for Wellness Center, staff supervision and development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership, supervision, and direction for Wellness Center operations, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, student health, outreach, consultation, and training programs.
  • Develop and implement short and long-term goals aligned with the university’s mission and strategic goals of fostering an university environment of well-being.
  • Consults as appropriate with consulting psychiatrist(s) and Student Affairs Coordinator on case management.
  • Manages third-party contracts as needed and appropriate with vendors for provision of services.
  • Serve as a member of university or division-wide committees and is involved in university policy formation and program development.
  • Responsible for the preparation and administration of the Wellness Center budget and for the preparation and submission of both departmental annual reports to the Dean of Students.
  • Plans for and implements on-going in-service training for the professional staff including regular staff meetings, case conferences, provision of professional resource material and for case supervision.
  • As appropriate and necessary, administers and interprets psychological tests to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and/or personal development of students is applicable.
  • As appropriate and necessary, coordinates referrals for psychotropic medication evaluations and/or medication refills and ensures continuity of care with medical provider.
  • Provides consultation and in-service training upon request to aid faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Serves as the university liaison for staff members, faculty, and other administrative departments/offices.
  • Encourages and directs, when appropriate, institutional research related to student counseling/health needs and research designed to contribute to the general body of scientific knowledge.
  • Conducts workshops and outreach services designed to provide mental health-related and wellness education to the university community.
  • As appropriate and necessary, provide support, supervision and oversight of daily public health operations and coordinate university-wide communications regarding public health with Marketing and Communications.
  • Manage immunization plan for scheduling, storing, and administering vaccines and ensure compliance with local, state and federal immunization regulations.
  • Oversee electronic medical record system(s).
  • Ensure compliance with ethical standards, state regulations, and accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee departmental budgets, resource allocation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with campus partners including, the Office of Residence Life, Office of Student Life, Accessibility Services, and academic Colleges and Schools to coordinate comprehensive student support.
  • Lead data-informed assessment of programs and services to enhance student outcomes and inform strategic planning.

JOB REQUIREMENTS SECTION

Minimum Qualifications

Education – A college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree; or 10 or more years of work experience in a related field.

Employment - Five years to seven years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Progressive leadership experience in a university counseling center, student health clinic or comparable mental health service.
  • Familiarity with an electronic records system is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of shifting college student demographics and their associated psychological challenges, including mental and behavioral health needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Licensed mental health clinician qualified to provide therapeutic clinical mental health services in the state (Psychologist, LCSW, LPC/LMHC, LMFT, or equivalent).
  • Master’s degree required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical/counseling position at a college counseling center or related experience with similar population with at least two years in a clinical and/or supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in professional staff team leadership and supervision.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

Salary/Pay Information

Commensurate with experience

Anticipated Schedule

Monday to Friday 8.30 Am to 5.00 PM. Need to work on occasional nights and weekends.
