Director of Student Experience - School of Medicine

The Director of Student Experience serves as the administrative leader responsible for the school-wide design, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the BYU School of Medicine’s student experience and co-curricular programming. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Experience and Well-Being, the Director establishes operational systems, procedures, annual priorities, and assessment practices that help medical students feel known, connected, and supported. The Director provides strategic and operational leadership for student organizations and government, leadership development, peer mentoring, specific milestone events, traditions, service, and community-building activities. The Director is accountable for translating the mission statement of BYU and the School of Medicine into a coordinated student experience that supports the formation of physicians who will minister to God’s children throughout the world as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ.”

This position is important to the success of the BYU School of Medicine, a newly established organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations.

What you'll be doing in this position

This is a student-facing, non-clinical leadership role. Percentages reflect approximate effort and may shift as enrollment grows and additional support staff are added.

1. Student Experience Strategy and Leadership

• Develop, implement, assess, and continuously improve a comprehensive, four-year student experience that strengthens belonging, connection, leadership, and service.
• Translate the mission of BYU and the School of Medicine into co-curricular student experiences that support the formation of capable, compassionate, Christ-centered physicians.
• Establish goals, annual priorities, operational procedures, program standards, and recommended policies for student experience in consultation with the Associate Dean of Student Experience and Well-being.
• Lead cross-functional coordination among School of Medicine leaders, faculty, staff, and campus partners to create a coherent, student-centered experience across all four years of medical education.
• Chair or lead designated committees and working groups related to student experience, student engagement, orientation, student leadership, service, or milestone programming.

1. Student Organizations

• Direct the development, governance, training, and ongoing oversight of student government and student organizations, including specialty-interest, service, affinity, and other mission-aligned groups.
• Establish and administer approval, accountability, communication, and funding processes for student organization events and operations.
• Advise student leaders in designing meaningful activities that foster community, service, belonging, leadership, professionalism, and responsible stewardship of school resources.
• Develop and oversee a peer mentoring program, including program design, mentor preparation, assignments, accountability, and evaluation of outcomes.
• Establish and maintain records, performance measures, and annual reporting for student organizations, student leaders, events, funding, and participation.

1. Milestone Events, Activities, and Traditions

• Provide strategic and operational oversight for specific milestone student events, including orientation, White Coat ceremonies; support other milestone events as needed.
• Develop traditions that help establish the culture and identity of the BYU School of Medicine.
• Ensure that major student experiences are purposeful, mission-aligned, inclusive, well-organized, and responsive to student needs.

1. Student Experience Operations

• Direct student experience communications and systems, including calendars, records, web resources, leadership opportunities, and other infrastructure necessary to support a coordinated four-year program.
• Develop and administer the annual Student Experience operating budget; approve expenditures within delegated authority and provide forecasts and recommendations to the Associate Dean.
• Lead the assessment of student experience, engagement, belonging, leadership development, and co-curricular participation using qualitative and quantitative data; prepare executive-level reports, recommendations, and annual improvement plans for School of Medicine Leadership.
• Serve as the School of Medicine's principal student experience liaison to relevant university offices and represent the school in university, AAMC, and other professional forums related to student experience.
• Coordinate the collection, maintenance, and presentation of student experience evidence for institutional planning, accreditation, continuous quality improvement, and other reporting requirements.

1. Student Support Navigation and Cross-Office Coordination

• Provide and oversee student experience problem-solving and identifying pathways that connect students with appropriate services.
• Consult with faculty and staff regarding general student experience concerns, student engagement, and referral pathways.
• Lead cross-office coordination related to student experience and contribute to integrated systems that provide holistic student support.
• Perform other duties and support other programs as assigned.

What qualifies you for this role

Education/Experience

Minimum Required:

• Bachelor's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, leadership, public administration, health professions education, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, student experience, student engagement, leadership development, higher education administration, medical education, or a related student-support setting.
• Experience advising student leaders or organizations and planning co-curricular programs, events, orientations, leadership development, or community-building initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and campus partners.
• Demonstrated alignment with and ability to advance the mission of BYU and the BYU School of Medicine.

Preferred:

• Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, educational leadership, counseling, public administration, health professions education, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, student experience, student engagement, leadership development, higher education administration, medical education, or a related student-support setting.
• Experience in a medical school, health professions school, graduate/professional program, or highly demanding academic environment.
• Experience launching or developing student experience structures or programs, such as student organizations, student government, peer mentoring, Learning Communities, orientation, milestone events, leadership development, service, or belonging initiatives.

Required:

• Strong understanding of student development, student engagement, belonging, leadership formation, and student experience in higher education.
• Ability to build trust with students and exercise sound judgment, discretion, and professional boundaries in sensitive situations.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, facilitation, and consultation skills.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple events, deadlines, stakeholders, and student needs.
• Ability to advise student leaders and help them develop sound judgment, professionalism, and accountability.
• Ability to work collaboratively across offices and clarify roles among student experience, student well-being, academic progress, financial aid, disability services, and other support functions.
• Ability to develop policies, processes, communications, and operational systems for student experience programs.
• Commitment to creating a respectful, inclusive, mission-centered student community.
• Ability to assess programs and use feedback for continuous improvement.
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for student programs, events, retreats, ceremonies, and student organization activities.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of medical student affairs, LCME expectations related to student support, and the needs of medical students.
• Experience developing student-facing web content, handbooks, newsletters, calendars, or resource guides.
• Familiarity with BYU policies, student conduct expectations, ecclesiastical endorsement context, and university student support resources.
• Experience supporting students from varied backgrounds, life experiences, family situations, and levels of preparation.

Pay Grade: 53

Typical Starting Pay: $73,000-$95,000

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
