In this role, you will lead and mentor a dedicated team of hospice social workers while providing clinical and administrative oversight of social work services across our service area. What you will do as the Director of Social Work

  • Provide leadership, clinical supervision, mentorship, and performance management for the hospice social work and counseling team.
  • Oversee the quality and delivery of psychosocial services, ensuring assessments, interventions, and individualized plans of care are timely, appropriate, and patient-centered.
  • Recruit, orient, develop, and evaluate social work staff while supporting professional growth and maintaining high standards of clinical practice.
  • Coordinate staffing, caseload assignments, coverage, and continuity of care across the hospice service area.
  • Ensure appropriate 24/7 on-call counselor coverage and provide ongoing supervision and support to on-call staff.
  • Collaborate closely with the Interdisciplinary Group, Nursing, Spiritual Care, and other clinical leaders to address complex patient and family needs.
  • Represent Social Work at the leadership level and participate in organizational committees, meetings, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Lead and support Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives, including chart audits, identifying trends, and developing performance improvement projects.
  • Ensure departmental practices remain consistent with applicable regulatory requirements, Medicare Conditions of Participation, Virginia licensure requirements, agency policies, and professional ethics.
  • Develop, review, and implement policies, procedures, and programs that support high-quality social work services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with healthcare organizations, community partners, and local resources throughout Southwest Virginia.
  • Facilitate ongoing education, team development, and department meetings to promote professional growth and strong clinical practice.
  • Respond to patient, family, staff, and community concerns related to social work services and help identify appropriate solutions.
  • Provide direct social work support when needed due to staffing needs, complex cases, or other circumstances.
  • Participate in Administrator on Call responsibilities on a rotational basis.

What we are looking for

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Current license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the Commonwealth of Virginia (preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of healthcare social work experience, with hospice or palliative care experience strongly preferred.
  • At least 3 years of supervisory or management experience, preferably in hospice, healthcare, or a related setting.
  • Strong understanding of end-of-life care, grief and loss, advance care planning, psychosocial assessment, and counseling interventions.
  • Proven ability to motivate, mentor, supervise, and develop social workers while fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-pressure or emotionally complex situations.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and departmental needs.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and standard computer applications.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Current Virginia driver’s license and a driving record that meets Good Samaritan requirements.

Schedule & Compensation

Schedule: Full-time leadership position with a primarily Monday–Friday schedule. The Director must maintain flexibility to respond to departmental needs, participate in occasional evening or weekend activities, and serve in the Administrator on Call rotation as scheduled.
