Job Description
Research and Development Director
Responsible for managing and directing all research and development activities for the organization. This includes developing and implementing research and development procedures, overseeing the development of new products and technologies, and ensuring that all research and development projects are completed on time and within budget. The Research and Development Director will also coordinate with other departments to ensure that all research and development activities align with the organization’s strategic goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in research and development, excellent leadership skills, and a proven track record of managing successful projects.
Role and Responsibilities
- Projects and development will be heavily focused on manufacturing of protein-based products and process development
- This role requires in-depth testing of product formulations with various manufacturing equipment vendors/suppliers to identify optimal product formulas, equipment, and manufacturing procedures for quality and cost efficiency
- Work cross-functionally with the project team to build a production operation including people, plant, process, and products
- Execute small-scale and large-scale plant tests - Effective scale-up from R&D to Full Production
- Create and manage product specifications, maintain accurate records, and analyze reports
- Utilize working knowledge of plant processes and facilities
- Provide onsite monitoring and technical assistance during testing and manufacturing of new products
- Successful commercialization of new products within timeline and budget
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement formulations, manufacturing processes, and commissioning of new equipment and production lines
- Perform other duties as assigned
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the R&D team, including direct oversight of 4+ team members
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Education
- 10+ years of experience preferred, with 5+ years managing mid- to large-scale manufacturing environments supporting multi-plant operations
- Experience in protein or food processing environments preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Self-starter with the ability to take ownership of projects and deliver results with minimal oversight
- Strong collaboration, organization, and prioritization skills
- Demonstrated technical competence in R&D and creative problem-solving ability
- Ability to interact effectively across manufacturing, lab, and office environments
