General Summary

The Director of Radiation Therapy (Photon Treatment), provides comprehensive leadership and oversight for AMC based photon treatment delivery activities, including all treatment operations performed on linear accelerators, intra-operative and the on-call service, within the MGB Academic Medical Centers’ Department of Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Boston campus and Brigham and Women’s Hospital Boston Campus.

The Director is directly responsible for supporting, mentoring, and supervising a leadership team, with direct oversight of Radiation Therapy Managers and indirect oversight of RTT Team Leads and the broader radiation therapy group. This role ensures that all team members perform at the highest levels of clinical and technical competence and that operational workflows are safe, efficient, and patient-centered. In addition, the Director oversees Practice Manager(s), providing strategic direction, mentorship, and support based on a deep understanding of physician workflows, patient needs, and departmental goals.

Serving as both a technical and clinical expert, the Radiation Therapy Director collaborates closely with physician, nurse, APP, physics, dosimetry, and administrative leaders to support high-quality treatment delivery, implement new technologies, enhance unit efficiency, and ensure full compliance with departmental, hospital, state, and federal regulatory standards. The incumbent is a key participant in departmental integration efforts, quality and safety initiatives and actively contributes to multidisciplinary projects aimed at advancing patient care, reducing risk, and promoting continuous improvement.

The Director of Radiation Therapy reports to the Senior Director of Clinical Operations and plays a critical role in shaping the future of Radiation Oncology services throughout Mass General Brigham.

Qualifications

Principal Duties / Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Collaboration

  • Serves as the procedural, technical, and operational expert for radiation therapy, performing managerial and team lead functions as needed.
  • Represents radiation therapy interests across the department, serving as a unified voice for therapists.
  • Under the guidance of the Sr. Director of Clinical Operations, partners with the Radiation Therapy leadership team to develop, plan and implement aligned radiation therapy procedures, workflows, and best practices across the AMCs and community sites.
  • Works closely with physicians, physicists, dosimetrists, and other leaders to ensure coordinated and quality-driven clinical operations.
  • Leads multidisciplinary meetings to promote process improvement, operational efficiency, and collaboration among role groups.
  • Provides leadership during emergency response planning and execution, particularly regarding the continuity of patient treatment operations.
  • Supports the development and implementation of new programs, services, and facilities, including participation in equipment selection and facility design.
  • Helps support and advise network affiliates, both local and international, as requested by Senior Director of Radiation Therapy

Clinical Operations

  • Maintains proficiency in simulation, treatment delivery, and associated software applications.
  • Oversees daily clinical operations to ensure efficient, safe, and timely patient treatments across areas of responsibility with a strong emphasis on optimizing patient experience.
  • Ensures compliance with all treatment protocols, safety policies, and radiation therapy practice standards.
  • Serves as a key resource during the implementation of new devices, equipment, and clinical procedures, providing project management support and oversight of training to staff.
  • Monitors patient scheduling to ensure optimal use of resources and excellent patient satisfaction.
  • Assists in planning and execution of temporary or permanent changes to patient care operations, including treatment downtimes, relocations, and new service rollouts.
  • Monitors clinical areas for safety hazards and ensures timely resolution and reporting.
  • Participates in Operational and Disease Site Meetings, representing the interests and insights of the radiation therapy and administrative teams.
  • Provides oversight of equipment functionality, interfacing with vendors, engineering and physics to ensure timely resolution of maintenance issues.

Human Resources Management

  • Provides direct leadership, oversight, and mentorship to Radiation Therapy Managers and Administrative Managers
  • Ensures adherence to departmental and system policies, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Support Radiation Therapy and Administrative Managers in recruiting efforts, onboarding, orientation, and competency development.
  • Works with direct reports to conduct monthly team meetings and regular one-on-one sessions to address staff questions, concerns, and developmental goals.
  • Supports Managers in employee performance management, including performance evaluations, improvement plans, and professional development initiatives.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels, scheduling efficiency, and minimal overtime through proactive workforce management.
  • Maintains proficiency with HR systems (e.g., Workday, UKG) for payroll, HR transactions, and performance management processes.
  • Serves as an advisor to academic radiation therapy programs and supports student learning and mentorship activities.

Quality Assurance & Process Improvement

  • Ensures accuracy, accessibility, and timely updates of all technical procedure guidelines.
  • Collaborates with Quality and Safety leadership to identify, develop, and implement process improvements and quality initiatives.
  • Participate in Peer Review Rounds, Safety Huddles, Quality and Safety meetings to support communication and care coordination.

Administrative & Financial Responsibilities

  • Participates in departmental operating and capital budgeting activities, expense management, procurement and vendor contracting activities.
  • Participates in department billing committee and serves as a billing resource for radiation therapy team ensuring accurate and complete billing of radiation therapy procedures.
  • Provides temporary coverage for senior leadership as needed and acts as a point person for urgent operational issues.
  • Collaborates with Practice Managers and Physicians to optimize patient flow and administrative processes.
  • Conducts departmental tours and represents the program to visitors, accrediting bodies, and external partners.

Education
Bachelor's Degree Radiation Therapy required or Master's Degree Related Field of Study preferred

Active Radiation Therapist MA State License - RT(T)

Active American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

Experience

Minimum 6 years radiation therapy experience with 2-3 of those years in management or leadership.

- Ability to effectively deal with patients and/or medical staff in sensitive and stressful situations.
- Ability to effectively orient, train and serve as a resource for radiation therapists and administrator support staff.
