Job Description

Director of Power Generation

Working with our business partners to create, improve and sustain industry and infrastructure. Orbital Engineering, Inc. (Orbital) has been driven by this core purpose for more than 50 years - energizing Orbital team members and helping our clients solve challenging and complex problems with innovative engineering, inspection, and construction solutions. Orbital team members are guided by the fundamental beliefs of building trusted relationships, personal accountability, innovation, and excellence in everything we do. Orbital is looking for others to join our team to continue activating our purpose and embrace our values.

Orbital Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Director of Power Generation to build and lead a new Power Generation business unit. This role is accountable for launching and scaling the business unit, driving business development with owners, developers, EPC partners, and strategic allies for new-build opportunities, and recruiting and developing high-performing subject matter expert (SME) teams to execute and support the unit’s growth.

This position is ideal for a proven leader who can combine market-facing growth (relationships, pipeline, proposals, positioning) with operational leadership (team building, delivery excellence, quality, and financial performance).

This is a remote position that will interface with teams and resources across the United States and international locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Business Unit Buildout & Strategy

  • Establish the Power Generation business unit strategy, service offerings, and go-to-market plan focused on new build and expansion opportunities.
  • Define the operating model: organizational structure, key roles, delivery approach, teaming/subconsultant strategy, and internal processes.
  • Build a scalable foundation for consistent delivery (standards, QA/QC expectations, lessons learned, and repeatable execution playbooks).

Business Development & Partnerships (New Builds)

  • Lead market outreach and relationship development with asset owners, developers, EPCs, OEMs, and strategic partners to originate new opportunities.
  • Own and grow a qualified pipeline; lead pursuit strategy, positioning, and capture planning for targeted accounts.
  • Drive proposal development, scope definition, and commercial strategy in coordination with internal leaders and operational teams.
  • Represent Orbital at key industry meetings, client visits, and conferences to expand brand presence and credibility.

Team & Capability Building (SME Organization)

  • Recruit, mentor, and retain SMEs across relevant disciplines to support power generation work
  • Build a high-performing culture with clear expectations for performance, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Support onboarding, coaching, and professional development; develop succession depth as the unit scales.

Operational Leadership & Delivery Excellence

  • Provide oversight and executive leadership for power generation projects—ensuring delivery on scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and ensure customer satisfaction through proactive communication and issue resolution.
  • Partner with internal leadership to manage financial performance (revenue, margin, utilization planning) and forecast accuracy.

Collaboration Across Orbital

  • Coordinate with other Orbital service lines to cross-sell and integrate capabilities to deliver comprehensive solutions.
  • Support recruiting, learning & development, and compliance with company and customer policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field
  • Significant experience leading power generation pursuits and/or executing power generation projects (new build, major upgrades, or owner’s engineering/EPC support).
  • Demonstrated success developing and maintaining executive-level client relationships.
  • Proven leadership experience building teams and scaling capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and strong business acumen/customer relationship management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Experience with new-build delivery environments (owners/developers, EPCs, OEMs, consultants) and complex multi-discipline execution.
  • Track record building a new practice, service line, or business unit with measurable revenue growth.
  • Experience leveraging/communicating relevant project experience in power generation environments (balance of plant, electrical upgrades, controls, emissions systems, fuel handling/coal delivery, etc.).
