Job Description

The Pharmacy Director oversees all pharmacy operations within the hospital, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant medication use across inpatient and outpatient services. This leadership role combines clinical expertise with administrative responsibility to support patient care in a resource-limited environment.

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to,
  • Direct and supervise procurement, storage, dispensing, and monitoring of medications.
  • Maintains cost effective operational aspects of the department in cooperation with administration and ancillary personnel.
  • Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for performance management of employees. Counsels and coaches’ employees and take appropriate disciplinary action for infractions of policy, seeking input from Human Resources if needed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other providers to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
  • Recruit, train, and evaluate pharmacists, technicians, and support staff.
  • Manage pharmacy budget, control costs, and negotiate vendor contracts.
  • Monitors and maintains operating expenses, including salaries and capital expense items within budgetary guidelines.
  • Responsible for the procurement of all medications obtained for Outpatient Pharmacy use.
  • Maintains the drug inventory at levels consistent with the needs of our customers and with minimum outdates; ensure that outdated drugs are not available for use.
  • Promote accuracy and precision at all levels of work.
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date policies and procedures for all aspects of drug control and pharmacy services consistent with the scope of the Pharmacy’s services.
  • Plans, organizes, supervises and directly provides pharmacy services consistent with the needs of the hospital.
  • Performs selection, training and evaluation of personnel in the provision of pharmacy services.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, rules and standards set forth by the regulatory and accreditation bodies.
  • Represent the facility in all state and federal regulatory audits, visits, and communication and insurance audits.
  • Performs duties of the staff pharmacist.
  • Protects patients and staff by adhering to infection-prevention protocols.
  • Providers presentations and other informative activities on drug-related topics to the healthcare community and general public.
  • Represents department at meetings, passing communication between team members and executives as needed. Plans and conducts regularly scheduled department staff meetings.
Job Requirements include but are not limited to,
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or PharmD Degree from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Registered Pharmacist in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
  • Required - 2-3 years of experience as pharmacist.
  • Prior hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Certified Immunizer.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
