Parish & Position Overview

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located in the historic Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, VA, seeks a full-time Music Director to lead our vibrant music ministry.

Founded in 1894, Sacred Heart is renowned for its beautiful architecture, exceptional acoustics, and outstanding sacred music tradition. Our parish, with nearly 600 families, is active, growing, and deeply committed to liturgical excellence. Norfolk is the cultural hub of Hampton Roads, home to the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, universities with strong music programs, and a thriving arts community.

Our Music Program

  • A highly skilled volunteer choir of ~20 members performing Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony, English choral works, and contemporary pieces.
  • A children’s choir with growth potential.
  • A small contemporary/folk ensemble for Saturday, 5.30 pm Mass.
  • Two exceptional pipe organs, including a historic 1927 Midmer-Losh (56 ranks) and an M.P. Moller instrument.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct music for all parish liturgies, including weekends, Holy Days, and other important parish occasions.
  • Plan and organize musical arrangements for all weddings and funerals.
  • Lead and accompany choirs and congregation on organ and piano.
  • Oversee and develop all music ensembles, including children’s programs.
  • Collaborate with clergy, staff, and volunteers to enhance worship through music.
  • Prepare worship aids and manage music resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in music or related field (preferred).
  • Proficient organist with strong improvisation skills.
  • 5–10 years of experience in Catholic music ministry.
  • Knowledge of Catholic liturgy and sacred music traditions.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time salaried position with health benefits and two to three weeks of paid vacation.
  • The salary range is between $65,000 and $ 75,000 annually, depending on academic qualifications.
  • Compensation for Funerals and/or weddings will be done in accordance with the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's musician compensation policies.
