Summary:
The Director of Medical Surgical Services is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and clinical excellence of the Med/Surg department. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies. The Director collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, manages departmental resources, and drives performance improvement initiatives to support Medina Healthcare System’s mission and values.
Essential Functions:
Leadership & Operations:
- Direct and coordinate daily operations, programs, and services within the Med/Surg department.
- Ensure staffing levels, workflows, and resources are optimized to meet patient care needs.
- Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and performance standards.
- Monitor and manage departmental budgets, expenditures, and capital equipment requests.
Clinical Oversight & Quality Improvement:
- Collaborate with nurse managers and medical staff to address patient care concerns and clinical challenges.
- Lead quality management, utilization review, and discharge planning initiatives.
- Conduct rounds to observe clinical practices and recommend improvements.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
Staff Development & Engagement:
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and retention of nursing staff.
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance evaluations for team members.
- Organize orientation, in-service education, and continuing professional development.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence.
Interdepartmental & External Collaboration:
- Coordinate with other departments, external agencies, and community partners to support patient care continuity.
- Serve as a liaison with ambulance services, law enforcement, clergy, and other stakeholders.
- Represent the department in leadership meetings and strategic planning efforts.
Strategic Planning & Innovation:
- Analyze departmental performance metrics and identify opportunities for innovation.
- Lead initiatives to improve patient outcomes, staff satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
- Participate in studies and investigations to enhance service delivery and clinical practices.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Directly supervises approximately 30 employees in the Med/Surg department.
- Responsibilities include hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, and disciplinary actions in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope of role.
Qualifications
Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Current Texas Registered Nurse (RN) License required.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of leadership experience in a clinical setting preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 90 days of hire.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required within 90 days of hire.
