About the Job

We're looking for a creative, strategic and hands-on Director of Marketing to help put Smokeball's AI on the map, accelerate customer acquisition and drive our next phase of growth.

You'll take the lead in shaping our marketing function from the ground up, owning strategy and execution across digital channels, traditional media, events and customer lifecycle programs. Working closely with Product Marketing, Product and our global marketing teams, you'll have the freedom to experiment with fresh ideas, build scalable campaigns and turn marketing investment into measurable business growth.

This isn't a role for someone who wants to sit on the sidelines. We're after an entrepreneurial leader who can think big, roll up their sleeves and get things done. You'll have the autonomy to engage agencies, build your own team as we grow and make a real impact from day one.

This is a hybrid role based in our office in Chicago, IL. All Chicagoland employees are required to be in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and execute integrated marketing plans that build brand awareness, drive customer acquisition, and support our product-led growth strategy
• Identify, test, and optimize digital and traditional channels, including paid search, social advertising, industry publications, and email
• Partner with Product Marketing to turn positioning into campaigns and test messaging for our ideal customer profiles
• Build lifecycle programs that move customers through acquisition, onboarding, engagement, conversion, and retention
• Create dashboards and reporting frameworks to track channel performance, acquisition costs, conversion funnels, and marketing ROI
• Lead events and industry marketing, including conferences, sponsorships, and webinars, in partnership with our parent company’s events team
• Collaborate with leadership and partners on joint marketing initiatives that expand our reach in the legal industry
• Manage marketing budgets, select and manage agencies, and recruit and lead a high-performing team as we scale
• Foster a culture of continuous testing, using customer insights and data to decide where to invest and what to change

Skills & Experience

• Significant marketing experience, ideally in high-growth SaaS, technology, or product-led businesses, with success executing integrated marketing programs
• A builder’s mentality, comfortable where processes, teams, and playbooks are still being created
• Strong digital marketing expertise, including paid acquisition, campaign management, funnel optimization, and marketing automation
• Analytical mindset with the ability to build and interpret dashboards, understand customer cohorts, and evaluate attribution
• Experience with product-led growth and customer lifecycle marketing
• Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with compelling messaging for distinct customer segments
• Experience managing marketing budgets, agencies, external partners, and cross-functional initiatives
• Leadership skills to recruit, mentor, and grow a team, plus willingness to personally execute when needed
• Comfort with ambiguity, moving quickly, and taking ownership of outcomes

Nice to Have

• Experience launching a new product or brand in a new market
• Background in legal tech, professional services, or marketing to legal professionals
• Experience with legal industry events, associations, or sponsorships
• Experience working with global or parent company marketing teams

Compensation

$170-190k per year
