AMS Impact Group

Director of Learning & Teaching

Reports To: Vice President of Curriculum & Instruction

Location: Hybrid - Tempe, AZ

Geographic Scope: Multi-State – Arizona, Nevada, Arkansas, and future AMS markets

Travel: Frequent travel to AMS campuses required

Position Summary

The Director of Learning & Teaching is a network-level leadership role responsible for shaping and supporting the instructional core of Academies of Math and Science (AMS), including curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning.

This person partners closely with school and network leaders, including principals, assistant principals, supervisors of principals, and department leads, to ensure that every campus has the tools, training, and support needed to deliver strong instruction to students across a multi-state network.

This role requires someone who has taught in a classroom, who understands the day-to-day realities of school and district systems, and who can translate that experience into practical, actionable guidance for school leaders. Because AMS operates across multiple states and continues to grow, regular travel to campuses is a core and expected part of this role.

About AMS Impact Group

AMS Impact Group is the management organization supporting Academies of Math and Science (AMS), a growing K–8 public charter school network serving communities across Arizona, Nevada, and Arkansas.

Our campuses primarily serve students and families in high-poverty communities, and we are committed to providing every student with a rigorous, joyful, and well-supported education regardless of zip code. As AMS continues to expand into new states and communities, AIG provides the academic, operational, financial, talent, enrollment, and strategic support necessary to help schools deliver strong outcomes for scholars.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment

  • Lead the development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of AMS's curriculum and instructional frameworks across all network campuses.
  • Analyze student achievement and assessment data to identify trends, instructional gaps, and areas for targeted support across states.
  • Ensure curriculum and assessment practices align with state-specific standards, requirements, and approved materials lists across Arizona, Nevada, and Arkansas.
  • Support the rollout of new curriculum, assessment tools, or instructional initiatives as the network grows and opens new campuses.
  • Stay current on best practices for serving students in high-poverty, high-mobility, and high-ELL school communities.

Professional Learning & Instructional Leadership

  • Design and deliver professional development for school leaders and teachers, with particular attention to supporting novice staff.
  • Partner with principals, assistant principals, and supervisors of principals to strengthen instructional leadership and coaching practices at the campus level.
  • Provide practical, actionable guidance to school leaders based on classroom experience and an understanding of school and district systems.
  • Support the consistent implementation of AMS's instructional vision and practices across campuses.

Network Collaboration & Student Support

  • Collaborate with network department leads, including EL, assessment, and special education, to ensure a coherent and coordinated instructional approach for all students.
  • Partner closely with school and network leaders to identify instructional needs and provide appropriate tools, training, and support.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders across the organization to strengthen instructional systems and student outcomes.

Multi-State Support & School Growth

  • Travel regularly to AMS campuses across all three states to observe instruction, coach leaders, and support implementation on-site.
  • Provide instructional support as AMS expands into new states, communities, and campuses.
  • Adapt instructional support and implementation strategies to meet the needs of campuses across different state and regulatory environments.
  • Represent AMS's instructional vision and practices to state agencies, authorizers, and community partners as needed.
  • Support network growth by helping ensure new and existing campuses have the instructional systems, resources, and professional learning needed for success.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Prior classroom teaching experience.
  • Prior experience working at the school and/or district level, such as instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, district-level curriculum leader, or academic staff member.
  • Demonstrated understanding of curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems.
  • Strong facilitation and professional development delivery skills.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly across AMS's multi-state network.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with leaders at every level of the organization.
  • Ability to translate instructional theory, systems, and data into practical and actionable guidance.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to support instructional implementation across multiple campuses and state contexts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in or supporting high-poverty school communities.
  • Experience working across multiple states, districts, or authorizers.
  • Experience with charter school systems and structures.
  • Familiarity with instructional coaching frameworks.
  • Experience supporting a network or system during a period of growth or expansion.
  • Background in K–8 education specifically.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid work environment with regular travel to AMS campuses in and out of state.
  • Frequent visits to school sites to provide coaching, training, monitoring, and support.
  • Extended periods of computer work, virtual meetings, and document review.
  • Occasional evening meetings and professional development events.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed to support multi-state campuses.

Travel Requirements

This is a multi-state role. The Director of Learning & Teaching should expect frequent travel to AMS campuses in Arizona, Nevada, and Arkansas, as well as future states AMS may expand into.

Travel needs may increase as the network grows and additional campuses are opened.
