The Role

The Director of Investments will lead the Commercial Mortgage group and oversee the strategy and performance of the organization’s commercial mortgage portfolio. This individual will combine deep commercial real estate lending expertise with investment judgment, relationship management, and leadership to generate attractive investment opportunities while effectively managing portfolio risk.

• Lead commercial mortgage production, underwriting, structuring, closing, servicing, reporting, and portfolio management activities.
• Source and evaluate first mortgage opportunities secured by commercial real estate, including permanent and construction/permanent loans.
• Direct underwriting and transaction execution, negotiate loan terms, and oversee the preparation of investment approval materials and documentation.
• Manage portfolio diversification across property types, tenancy, geographic markets, and other key risk characteristics.
• Develop and maintain market relationships to generate loan volume consistent with the organization’s investment objectives and risk-adjusted return requirements.
• Lead and develop the Commercial Mortgage team while establishing departmental priorities, goals, and performance expectations.
• Monitor portfolio performance and proactively address credit, servicing, and problem-loan situations as needed.
• Partner with senior leadership on portfolio strategy, market conditions, investment opportunities, and risk management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related discipline required; CFA Charter and/or MBA preferred.
• 15+ years of commercial mortgage underwriting and lending experience, preferably within a life insurance company.
• Strong track record of sourcing, underwriting, negotiating, and closing first mortgage loans secured by commercial real estate.
• Demonstrated experience leading a commercial mortgage function with deep knowledge of origination, pricing, underwriting, risk management, and closing.
• Strong knowledge of commercial property types and real estate markets nationally, with demonstrated leadership, analytical, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to travel approximately 3–6 days per month and must currently reside in the Oklahoma City metro area or be willing to relocate.
