POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Instructional Technology will build and maintain applications that support school operations while providing technical support across all departments. This role works directly with staff to troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues, gather information, analyze data, and collaborate with internal teams and third-party partners.
In support of UVA’s online education mission, this position collaborates with all departments to deliver ongoing technical training and support, ensuring effective use of instructional and operational technologies. The role requires versatility and a strong ability to quickly learn and adapt to new tools and systems.
The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of Google Workspace, Microsoft technologies, and SQL platforms (e.g., PostgreSQL, T-SQL, Google BigQuery). The Director of Instructional Technology will work in accordance with all applicable laws, guidelines, and UVA policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Department Oversight
● Supervise and support members of the Instructional Technology team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement, including workload management, project prioritization, and performance oversight.
● Mentor team members in technical skills, best practices, and professional growth.
● Review team deliverables and processes to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with organizational goals.
Strategic Technology & Application Development
● Provide strategic direction for the design, development, and maintenance of applications that support instructional delivery and school operations.
● Develop both user-facing and back-end systems, ensuring scalability, usability, and long-term sustainability.
● Guide the adoption and integration of technologies across the organization, including Canvas LMS and other enterprise platforms.
● Collaborate with staff to assess project feasibility, timelines, and resource allocation. Data Systems, Technical Support & Infrastructure Oversight
● Develop and maintain data systems, dashboards, and reporting tools to support organizational decision-making.
● Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and accessibility across platforms.
● Partner with school leadership and departments to deliver actionable insights and improve operational processes.
● Monitor and resolve data-related issues, including compliance and reporting requirements. ● Ensure effective technical support services for all departments, including hardware, software, and system troubleshooting.
● Oversee the management of the technology ticketing system to ensure timely and effective resolution of requests.
Instructional Technology & Professional Development
● Implement instructional technology initiatives aligned with UVA’s online learning mission. ● Design and ensure delivery of high-quality professional development for staff and students on technology platforms and best practices.
● Ensure effective onboarding and ongoing training experiences, including beginning- and end-of-year training programs.
● Collaborate with academic leadership to manage instructional platforms, including Canvas templates, blueprint courses, and enrollments.
Cross-Department Collaboration
● Serve as a liaison between the technology department and other departments, ensuring alignment of technology solutions with organizational needs.
● Partner with stakeholders to identify challenges and implement innovative, technology-driven solutions.
● Support communication initiatives, data requests, and system integrations across departments. Continuous Improvement & Innovation
● Evaluate and refine technology systems, workflows, and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
● Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in instructional and enterprise technology.
● Represent the organization in external professional development opportunities, conferences, and state-level meetings as needed.
Vendor & Partnership Management
● Establish relationships with external vendors and service providers, including evaluating products and service offerings, participating in contract review and initiation, and coordinating implementation or sunsetting.
● Oversee ongoing vendor performance, troubleshoot issues with third-party platforms, and ensure services align with organizational needs and compliance requirements.
Compliance & Additional Responsibilities
- Ensure all technology operations comply with applicable laws, regulations, and UVA policies.
- Support technology needs for school events and organizational initiatives.
- Travel as required for statewide testing support and other organizational events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● Master's Degree
● Minimum of five years of related professional work experience

● 5 + years of experience as an educational leader
● 4 + years in online learning environments
● 3 + years of charter or traditional school system
