Established in 1970, Southside Virginia Community College ( SVCC) is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System, with seven locations across several counties, including Brunswick, Charlotte, Nottoway, Mecklenburg, Greensville, and Halifax. SVCC serves the largest community college region in the state, covering ten counties and one city.

Ready to Lead Strategic Planning, Accreditation, and Institutional Success?

The Director of Institutional Effectiveness provides leadership for institutional research, assessment, strategic planning, accreditation, data governance, and institutional reporting activities. The position develops and maintains systems to collect, analyze, interpret, and disseminate information that supports institutional effectiveness, continuous improvement, accountability, compliance, and decision-making.

The Director works collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and external agencies to support evidence-based planning and evaluation and to ensure compliance with federal, state, VCCS, and accreditation requirements.

The Director reports to the Vice President of Enrollment Management & Student Success and serves as a member of the College leadership team.

The successful candidate will reside on our Christanna campus in Alberta, however, will have college wide responsibilities serving all locations.

The following are duties of each area of responsibility:

Strategic Planning
  • Provides leadership for college-wide strategic planning activities.
  • Serves as staff support to the College Planning Committee.
  • Coordinates the development, implementation, assessment, and monitoring of the College Strategic Plan and annual operational plans.
  • Maintains documentation related to strategic goals, objectives, performance indicators, and institutional outcomes.
  • Monitors institutional progress toward strategic priorities and prepares progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promotes a culture of evidence-based planning and decision-making throughout the institution

Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment
  • Provides leadership for the College’s institutional effectiveness and assessment processes.
  • Coordinates development, implementation, and evaluation of institutional, program, administrative, and student learning outcomes assessment activities.
  • Ensures compliance with assessment requirements established by the Virginia Community College System and accreditation agencies.
  • Provides training, guidance, and technical assistance related to assessment planning, implementation, documentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with academic and administrative units to identify, assess, and improve institutional effectiveness measures.
  • Supports continuous improvement efforts through analysis and interpretation of assessment results.

Accreditation and Compliance
  • Serves as the College’s accreditation liaison and primary coordinator for accreditation activities.
  • Coordinates preparation of accreditation reports, monitoring reports, substantive change submissions, and reaffirmation documentation.
  • Maintains institutional accreditation records and supporting documentation.
  • Monitors accreditation standards and communicates requirements to faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Provides leadership and support for accreditation-related planning and compliance activities.
  • Coordinates institutional responses to accreditation recommendations and findings.

Institutional Research and Data Analytics
  • Establishes and directs institutional research functions to ensure data quality, accuracy, integrity, and accessibility.
  • Conducts research studies and analyses to support institutional planning, policy development, program evaluation, enrollment management, student success initiatives, and resource allocation decisions.
  • Maintains institutional data resources including fact books, dashboards, and institutional performance reports.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets demographic, economic, workforce, and educational data relevant to the College service region.
  • Provides analytical support for grant development, strategic initiatives, and institutional planning efforts.
  • Prepares research findings through reports, presentations, executive summaries, and other communications.

Reporting and Accountability
  • Directs and coordinates institutional reporting requirements for the Virginia Community College System, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges ( SACSCOC), federal agencies, and other external organizations.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Oversees data validation and quality assurance processes.
  • Coordinates preparation and submission of institutional accountability reports and performance measures.
  • Maintains official institutional data files and reporting documentation.

Leadership and Service
  • Serves on institutional committees, councils, and task forces.
  • Represents the College in local, regional, state, and national meetings related to institutional effectiveness, assessment, research, and accreditation.
  • Remains current regarding trends, regulations, methodologies, and best practices in higher education research, assessment, planning, and accreditation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Enrollment Management & Student Success.

Special Responsibilities:
  • The Director of Institutional Effectiveness serves as the College’s lead administrator for institutional effectiveness, assessment, accreditation, planning, research, and reporting activities.
  • The Director of Institutional Effectiveness is responsible for the IT Security Role of System Owner as specified in the Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology Resource Management Security Standards

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, Educational Research, Public Administration, Statistics, Social Sciences, Data Analytics, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in institutional research, institutional effectiveness, assessment, strategic planning, accreditation, or program evaluation in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or coordinating institutional accreditation activities, including direct involvement with SACSCOC compliance certification, monitoring, substantive change, or reaffirmation processes.
  • Experience utilizing institutional effectiveness or assessment management systems, including Watermark Planning & Self-Study or comparable platforms.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data and translating findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Experience preparing institutional reports and presenting information to executive leadership, governing bodies, external agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and technology skills.

Additional Considerations
  • Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in institutional effectiveness, institutional research, assessment, planning, or accreditation in higher education.
  • Experience serving as an institutional accreditation liaison or leading the preparation of accreditation reports, compliance certifications, monitoring reports, or substantive change submissions.
  • Direct experience serving as an institutional lead or key contributor during a SACSCOC reaffirmation, monitoring, substantive change, or special committee review process.
  • Community college experience.
  • Experience using Watermark Planning & Self-Study as an institutional effectiveness and accreditation management system.
  • Experience with Virginia Community College System ( VCCS) reporting systems, data structures, and accountability reporting requirements.
  • Experience with SCHEV, IPEDS, and other state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Experience developing or maintaining institutional dashboards and using statistical software, business intelligence tools, or data visualization platforms to support institutional decision-making.
  • Experience leading complex, cross-functional institutional initiatives or managing large-scale projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, evaluating, and developing employees.
