Job Description

Talent Vision, a Staffing and Consulting Firm, is partnering with a distinguished charter school in Rochester, NY, to recruit a dedicated Director of Human Resources. This leadership role combines strategic HR oversight with hands-on partnership across school operations to build and sustain a high-performing, equitable, and student-centered workforce. The Director of Human Resources will design and implement human capital strategies, manage talent acquisition and retention, ensure compliance with employment and labor regulations, and foster a collaborative culture that supports staff development and student success.

Core Responsibilities of the Director of Human Resources

  • Develop and execute comprehensive HR strategies aligned with the school’s mission, including workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession planning.

  • Lead full-cycle recruitment for certified and classified staff: create job postings, coordinate interviews, manage candidate pipelines, and oversee background checks and credential verification.

  • Oversee employee relations, offering guidance and coaching to school leadership and staff on performance management, conflict resolution, and professional conduct.

  • Administer compensation and benefits programs; partner with finance to ensure accurate payroll processing and equitable salary practices.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable), and district or charter policies; maintain accurate personnel records and reporting.

  • Design and implement performance evaluation systems for certificated and support staff, provide training on observation and feedback protocols, and support performance improvement plans when needed.

  • Coordinate professional learning and leadership development programs that build instructional capacity and support career pathways for staff.

  • Manage employee leaves, accommodations, and return-to-work processes in partnership with benefits providers and medical professionals as appropriate.

  • Partner with school leadership to advance an inclusive, culturally responsive workplace that promotes equity, staff wellbeing, and retention of diverse talent.

  • Analyze HR metrics and produce regular reports on staffing, turnover, recruitment effectiveness, and other key indicators to inform strategic decision-making.

  • Serve as a trusted member of the school’s leadership team, participating in policy development, strategic planning, and community engagement efforts.

Qualifications Needed for the Role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Education Leadership, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of five years of progressive HR experience, including at least two years in a leadership or supervisory role; experience in K–12 education or charter school settings strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and HR compliance.

  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws, special education staffing requirements, and applicable collective bargaining or employment agreements.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills; ability to build trusting relationships with staff, families, and external partners.

  • Data-driven mindset with experience using HR information systems and preparing actionable reports from HR metrics.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced school environment.

  • Commitment to equity, culturally responsive practices, and fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.

  • Familiarity with benefits administration, payroll practices, and employee leave processes.

  • SHRM, PHR, SPHR, or similar HR certification is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary aligned with experience and qualifications.

  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and retirement options.

  • Opportunities for professional development and leadership growth within the Talent Vision network and partner schools.
