Job Shift: 1st ShiftPOSITION PURPOSE
The Director of Housekeeping manages the day-to-day and long term operations of the Housekeeping and Laundry department, including budgeting, forecasting, scheduling and financial planning of the departments.
Areas of responsibility include Housekeeping and Public Areas of The Westin and Solea Carlsbad Resort & Spa and Laundry operations at The Westin/Solea Carlsbad. Strives to continually improve guest and employee satisfaction and maximize the financial performance of the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Managing Housekeeping Operations
- Maintains strong working relationship with Front Office to ensure effective communications for operational issues.
- Obtains list of rooms to be cleaned immediately and list of prospective check-outs or discharges to prepare work assignments.
- Inventories stock to ensure adequate supplies.
- Ensures guestrooms, public space and employee areas are cleaned according to operating standards.
- Ensures compliance with all housekeeping policies, standards and procedures.
- Initiates and maintains an effective inspection program including rooms, public areas, employee work and locker areas, storage areas, recreation areas, laundry areas, garage and grounds.
Managing Departmental Costs
- Supervises and approves the budgeting and ordering of guestroom and cleaning supplies.
- Understands the importance of department’s operation on the overall property financial goals and educates staff on details as appropriate.
- Manages areas of operation to budget by reviewing operating statements, budget worksheets and payroll progress reports.
- Keeps the Housekeeping team focused on the critical components of operations to drive guest satisfaction and the desired financial results.
- Manages department controllable expenses and cost per occupied room to achieve or exceed budgeted goals.
Ensuring Exceptional Customer Service
- Responds to and handles guest problems and complaints effectively.
- Incorporates guest satisfaction as a component of departmental meetings with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Empowers employees to provide excellent customer service.
- Develops goals and expectations for direct report managers.
- Celebrates successes and publicly recognizes the contributions of team members.
- Reviews employee satisfaction results to identify and address employee problems or concerns.
- Communicates expectations, recognizes performance, and produces desired business results.
Conducting Human Resources Activities
- Ensures property policies are administered fairly and consistently.
- Ensures disciplinary procedures and documentation are completed according to SOP’s.
- Establishes goals and objectives for all areas of responsibility.
- Directs staff to strive for continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility.
- Interviews and hires management and hourly employees with the appropriate skills to meet the business needs of the operation.
- Manages employee progressive discipline procedures for areas of responsibility.
- Reviews staffing levels to ensure that guest service, operational needs and financial objectives are met.
- Establishes and maintains open, collaborative relationships with employees and ensures employees do the same within the team.
- Ensures employees are treated fairly and equitably.
Other:
Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Employees with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel. In addition, attendance at all scheduled training sessions and meetings is required.
Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with Westin/Solea Carlsbad Resort & Spa rules and regulations for the safe and effective operation of the hotel’s facilities. Employees who violate hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the hotel:

QualificationsSPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
- Must be able to read and write to facilitate the communication process.
- Requires good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge of computer accounting programs, math skills as well as budgetary analysis capabilities required.
- Must possess basic computational ability.
- Must possess basic computer skills.
- Most tasks are performed in a team environment with the employee acting as a team leader. There is minimal direct supervision.

- The following requirements must be met for Driver’s to be approved to drive under Company insurance:
- Maximum of 1 moving violation in the last three years in combination with one at fault accident.
- Maximum of 2 moving violations in the last 3 years with no at fault accidents.
- Maximum of 2 at fault accidents in the last 3 years with no moving violations.
- No tickets for speeding over 80 miles per hour.
- All drivers must be licensed for at least 3 years.
- Any driver with any of the following in the last 3 years is unacceptable:
- Suspension or revocation for other than failure to pay fines.
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Careless Driving.
- Negligent homicide arising out of the use of a motor vehicle.
- Operating during a period of revocation or suspension.
- Using a motor vehicle for the commission of a felony.
- Aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.
- Operation of a motor vehicle without owners’ authority.
- Operating a motor vehicle while unlicensed.
- Speed Contests.
- Any other criminal use of a motor vehicle.
- Drivers between the ages of 21 and 25 will be considered so long as:
- No driving of 15 passenger vans.
- Clean MVR
- Valid Driver’s License in effect for at least 3 years.
Physical Demands
- Most work tasks are performed indoors. Temperature is moderate and controlled by hotel environmental systems.
- Must be able to sit at a desk for up to 5 hours per day. Walking and standing are required during the rest of the working day. Length of time of these tasks may vary from day to day and task to task.
- Must be able to exert well-paced ability to reach other departments of the hotel on a timely basis.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis.
- Must be able to push and pull carts and equipment weighing up to 250 lbs. occasionally.
- Must be able to exert well-paced ability in limited space.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning/inspection tasks.
- Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
- Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and subordinates.
- Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
- Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
- Must have finger dexterity to be able to operate office equipment such as computers, printers, 10-key adding machine, electric typewriter, multi-line touch tone phone, filing cabinets, FAX machines, photocopiers, dolly and other office equipment as needed.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED; 3 years’ leadership experience in the housekeeping or related professional area.
- OR
- 2-year degree from an accredited university in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Hospitality, Business Administration, or related major; 2 years’ experience the housekeeping or related professional area.
