The Director of Finance will serve as the senior financial leader for the Home Builders Division, overseeing the financial operations of two residential construction locations and supporting the financial management of the division’s homebuilding activities from development through construction completion.

This role will partner closely with the Construction Manager and Director of Purchasing to ensure strong financial controls, accurate job costing, disciplined purchasing and payables, effective cash management, and timely financial reporting. The Director of Finance will work horizontally across the organization to connect financial performance with operational execution and will serve as a strategic finance partner to construction and purchasing leadership.

The Director of Finance will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and will be accountable for delivering meaningful financial analysis, forecasting, and strategic insight that enables leadership to make informed decisions regarding profitability, cash flow, construction costs, and overall business performance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION(S):

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Lead the financial management and reporting for two homebuilding locations.
  • Oversee monthly close processes and ensure financial statements are complete, accurate, and delivered timely.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations and MD&A (Management Discussion & Analysis) of financial results, including thorough explanations of variances, trends, and business drivers.
  • Provide the CFO with clear analysis of financial performance, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions.
  • Ensure appropriate accounting policies, internal controls, and financial procedures are consistently followed across the division.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger, balance sheet, job costing, and financial reporting.

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Lead the division’s financial planning and analysis activities.
  • Develop monthly and quarterly financial forecasts, including revenue, construction costs, operating expenses, profitability, and cash flow.
  • Prepare FP&A reporting that provides leadership with visibility into actual results versus budget, forecast, and prior periods.
  • Identify emerging financial trends and provide actionable recommendations to improve financial performance.
  • Develop financial models and analysis to support new home construction, development decisions, purchasing strategies, and operational initiatives.
  • Partner with the CFO on annual budgeting and long-range financial planning.

Construction Finance & Job Costing

  • Oversee financial reporting and job costing for residential home construction.
  • Partner directly with the Construction Manager to monitor construction budgets, commitments, change orders, draws, costs incurred, and projected costs to complete.
  • Ensure construction costs are accurately coded and properly allocated to individual homes and projects.
  • Analyze job profitability and identify potential cost overruns or margin erosion early.
  • Establish and monitor financial controls around construction draws, vendor payments, commitments, and project expenditures.
  • Provide financial insight to Builder's President into project performance and assist leadership in making financially sound decisions.

Cash Flow Management

  • Own the development and maintenance of detailed cash flow forecasts for the homebuilding operations.
  • Provide monthly and quarterly cash flow projections to the CFO and senior leadership.
  • Monitor expected construction expenditures, vendor commitments, receivables, draws, and other cash requirements.
  • Identify potential liquidity constraints or funding requirements in advance and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Partner with Construction and Purchasing to align project schedules and purchasing commitments with available cash resources.

Purchasing & Accounts Payable Partnership

  • Work closely with the Director of Purchasing to ensure purchasing activity aligns with approved budgets, construction schedules, and financial objectives.
  • Establish strong controls around purchase orders, vendor commitments, invoices, and payment approvals.
  • Partner with Accounts Payable to ensure timely and accurate processing of vendor invoices while maintaining appropriate documentation and controls.
  • Analyze purchasing trends and vendor spend to identify opportunities for cost savings and improved financial performance.
  • Ensure purchasing and accounting systems provide a reliable audit trail from purchase order through payment.

Team Leadership

Responsibilities include:

  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations.
  • Develop team members through coaching, accountability, and continuous process improvement.
  • Ensure appropriate segregation of duties and internal controls.
  • Create efficient accounting processes that support both the construction operation and corporate finance requirements.
  • Establish a culture of accuracy, responsiveness, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Key participant during annual external audits

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field required; CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with significant experience in construction, homebuilding, real estate development, or a related industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, work-in-progress accounting, and project profitability.
  • Demonstrated experience leading financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
  • Experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Experience with ERP, construction accounting, purchasing, and financial reporting systems.
  • Ability to translate complex financial information into clear business recommendations.

APPROXIMATE SCHEDULE AND HOURS:

·Full time exempt position not eligible for overtime. Weekdays, weekends, and Holidays. Schedule flexible as business dictates.
