Job Description

A lower middle market private equity firm in Columbia, Missouri, buys operating companies and holds them for the long haul: no flip, no exit timeline. The firm has spent more than a decade building a portfolio of operating businesses across multiple industries, and the team has built the kind of low-ego, intellectually honest culture that's hard to find in traditional PE.

This is the most senior finance seat at the firm, reporting directly to the President & CIO. You will lead financial governance and ensure a single source of truth across fund and portfolio company reporting.

What You'll Own

Think of this role as head of finance with a heavy dose of fund accounting, portfolio oversight, and investment due diligence.

Fund-Level Reporting & Audit

You'll be the single point of accountability for the firm's financials.

  • Own production of fund-level GAAP financial statements, capital account reporting, and carry calculations.
  • Run the annual GAAP audit from kickoff to close with external auditors.
  • Deliver quarterly valuations within 30 days of quarter-end, every quarter.
  • Coordinate state and federal tax compliance with the firm's outside tax advisor, including portfolio company filings, K-1 distribution, and deferred tax calculations.

Portfolio Company Financial Oversight

You'll manage the financial partners as they manage controllers across the portfolio.

  • Aggregate financials, update annual operating plans, and circulate dashboards across the senior team and boards.
  • Hold controllers and financial partners to a 10-day month-end close.
  • Take direct oversight of one or two portfolio companies yourself, and be ready to step in to cover a financial partner if needed.
  • Manage relationships in which you lack positional authority (portfolio company controllers, CEOs, external auditors) by building credibility and trust.

Annual Budgeting & Blueprint Process

The firm runs on a blueprint (operating plan) that translates each company's annual budget into a measurable plan.

  • Aggregate budgets across the portfolio and turn them into blueprints and dashboards the team actually uses.
  • Manage the monthly process of tracking actuals against plan.
  • Surface variances dispassionately so the board and operators can act.

Financial Diligence on New Acquisitions

When the firm goes after a new deal, you lead the financial workstream.

  • Take the investment memo and model, identify the assumptions that need verification, and chase them down.
  • Run proof-of-cash analyses, GL reconciliations against bank statements, and revenue verified against cash inflows. This is detailed, primary-source work that gives the firm conviction before capital moves.

What Success Looks Like (12 Months In)

If you're thriving in this role, a few things will be true:

  • The fund's books are accurate: GAAP statements, capital accounts, and carry calculations are clean and ready when leadership asks.
  • Audit and tax cycles run on time: Audited financials and K-1s go out by their March deadlines without drama.
  • Quarterly valuations close in 30 days. Every quarter, no exceptions.
  • Portfolio companies are closing in 10 days. Their controllers know what's expected and meet deadlines because you set the standard.
  • Leadership makes decisions on facts you can stand behind. When the President needs to know whether the firm is on track, he comes to you and gets a straight answer.

Who You Probably Are

You don't have to check every box, but if these qualifications are applicable, and you’re entertaining, likable, and curious, this could be the right fit for you:

  • You're financially fluent: CPA or equivalent, comfortable preparing or reviewing GAAP financial statements and running external audits end to end.
  • You've managed reporting across multiple entities (a fund, a portfolio of operating companies, or a multi-entity business), holding stakeholders accountable on tight timelines.
  • You're comfortable across mixed accounting systems (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, Excel) as a consumer of reporting data, not a builder of the books.
  • You can learn fund mechanics if you don't already have them. Capital accounts, carry, K-1s: the firm has internal expertise to lean on while you ramp.

Backgrounds that often thrive in this kind of role:

  • 10+ years of progressive finance experience, with the last several leading a team
  • Director of Finance, Senior Controller, or Head of Finance at a multi-entity company, fund, family office, or PE-backed business
  • A forensic accounting credential (CFE) or a background in audit or transaction advisory is a plus

Why This Will Excite You

  • Trusted source of truth: Every decision at the firm flows from your numbers.
  • A seat at the diligence table: When the firm acquires a new company, you're the one verifying the numbers before capital moves.
  • Pathway to CFO: As the firm grows, this runway is available to the right person.
  • Operating diversity: Every month brings a different problem across different companies and industries.
  • Small, sharp team: People who care about craft, say what they mean, and trust you to do your job without being micro-managed.
